Capitalization of Microsoft for the first time exceeded $1 trillion. This is the fruit of her successful transformation from a Windows developer to a cloud service provider.
What happened. Microsoft officially joined the $1 trillion club after trading opened on Thursday. Apple and Amazon crossed that threshold last year, but they are now cheaper at $975 billion and $942 billion, respectively.
On the eve of Microsoft published a very strong report for the third fiscal quarter. Trading on Wednesday closed at $125 per share, but already in premarket quotations rose by almost 5% to $131. This gave a market capitalization of $1.01 trillion. Trading on Thursday opened below $130.51 per trillion share, but in the first hour of trading, quotes broke that mark.
Context. Microsoft, which became the leader in capitalization at the beginning of the year, was the last time the most valuable company in the world in 2002 ($250 billion), and before that it was on the threshold of the “dot-com bubble” in 1999.
The "father" of Microsoft's new success should be considered CEO Satya Nadella, who took this post in 2014 and from the very beginning made a bet on open architectures and cloud solutions. He is only the third head of the company after Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer.
