British Prime Minister Theresa May has fired Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson due to a loss of confidence, Reuters reports.
In a letter to Williamson, quoted by BBC News and Sky News , May said he was fired following an investigation into leaks from a UK National Security Council meeting. According to Reuters, we are talking about a meeting at which the authorities allowed Huawei to develop a fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication network in the country.
According to May, the investigation found "compelling evidence" that Williamson was at fault for leaking classified information. “No other credible version of events has been found,” the prime minister said in a letter. Williamson denies his guilt.
Penny Mordaunt, who previously held the post of Minister for International Development, has been appointed the new head of the British Ministry of Defense. She will be the first female Secretary of Defense in British history.
