Special Counsel Robert Mueller Refused to Discuss the Russia Investigation Publicly; Congress Awaits His Testimony

Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who investigated Russian interference in the US elections , said he does not intend to publicly discuss the results of his work, including in the US Congress.

"Nothing we say will go beyond the scope of our report. <…> We have chosen our words carefully, and the work speaks for itself. This report is my testimony," Mueller said.

He stressed that if he testified in Congress, he would not present any new information. However, he did not refuse to directly testify in Congress.

On May 29, Mueller commented publicly on the investigation for the first time, repeating the main points of his report released in mid-April. The special counsel added that he had officially finished his work and was returning to private life.

• Mueller's statement came amid speculation that he might appear before the US Congress. May 15 was tipped as a possible date for his testimony, but the event ultimately did not take place.
• In early May, it was reported that Mueller had expressed dissatisfaction with the way Attorney General William Barr had presented the contents of his report. Opponents of President Donald Trump accused Barr of trying to downplay the parts of the report that dealt with Trump's possible interference in the investigation.
