Director Franco Zeffirelli dies

Director Franco Zeffirelli has died in Rome. He was 96 years old.

Zeffirelli began his career in the late 1940s as an actor and theater designer. In the 1950s, he began directing theater and opera productions.

Zeffirelli's first film directorial work was Camping in 1957. His most famous paintings were The Taming of the Shrew (1967), Romeo and Juliet (1968), Hamlet (1990), Jane Eyre (1996).

• Zeffirelli is a two-time Emmy and BAFTA winner and has also been nominated twice for an Oscar.
