The human rights organization Committee “ Civil Assistance ” and “ New Gazeta ” created the game “ Shelter ”. Its participants try to get a refugee certificate in the Russian Federation. The launch of the game is dedicated to World Refugees Day, which is celebrated on June 20.
Refugee certificate is a document that allows you to live in legal status, work and be treated. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, as of April 1, 2019, 578 people have a refugee status. And in the first quarter of 2019, only 7 people received refugee status. There are much more people who are currently in the country in the country.
“We realized that we need to make such a game when we heard the phrase in the circle of friends:“ I saw refugees only in Europe. ” And in response to the question, but who are those people who, for example, distribute leaflets at the metro, heard: "Students." We all know that there is a war in Syria, but we do not think that the Syrians can run to Russia. We read in the news about female circumcision in Nigeria, but we do not assume that women from this region can risk their lives to get a visa to Russia and avoid brutal reprisals. “Shelter” is a story about people who were forced to leave their native countries in the hope of a better life, but encountered Russian realities. ” Daria Manina, coordinator of communication projects in the Committee "Civil Assistance".
The creators of the project say that people flee to Russia and are trying to get asylum here, but few people know about it. Despite the fact that Russia joined the Convention on the status of refugees and adopted the federal law “ On Refugees ”, in practice the state does not support people who have forced to leave their homeland due to wars or persecution. Therefore, the authors of the "shelter" sought to make this problem visible.
