Trump imposed new sanctions against Iran

The President of the United States signed an executive order on new sanctions against Iran, which he promised after the Iranian military shot down a US heavy drone.

Quote: "I think we have shown great restraint - very great restraint - but this does not mean that we are going to show it in the future <...> These measures represent a decisive and proportionate response to Iran's increasingly provocative actions."

  • The sanctions are "tough" and could last "years," the US president told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House.
  • Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and members of his entourage from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) will be subject to personal sanctions.
  • The United States intends to cut off access to financial resources for these individuals. Trump believes that it is the Iranian leader who is responsible for the country's "hostile" behavior.
  • Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin explained that sanctions were imposed both for the downed drone and in accordance with previous US plans. We wrote more about the latest escalation in the Persian Gulf and the details of planning for the failed US missile attack on Iran here .
  • The US aims to simultaneously nullify Iran's oil exports and prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons. Trump echoed that idea again today.
