In Kirov, two thousand people took part in a rally against a hazardous waste disposal plant

On June 30, an agreed rally against the construction of the Maradykovsky hazardous waste disposal complex took place in Kirov.

As the organizer of the action, Valery Semenishchev, told Interfax, about two thousand residents gathered in the park near the monument to Stepan Khalturin. The event took place without incident.

The protesters prepared a resolution demanding that the construction of a complex for the disposal of class 1 and 2 hazardous waste on the premises of the existing Maradykovsky chemical weapons destruction plant in the village of Mirny be abandoned. The rally participants also demanded that the authorities hold a referendum on the future of the plant. The protesters intend to send the document adopted at the rally to the Russian government, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the head of the Kirov region.

According to a decree of the Russian government, by 2023 Rosatom must repurpose four chemical weapons destruction complexes – Maradykovsky in the Kirov region, Kambarka in Udmurtia, Shchuchye in the Kurgan region, and Gorny in the Saratov region – into plants for the disposal of especially hazardous waste.

The company RosRAO, which is the developer of the complexes, announced that they plan to process only organic (waste from chemical and petrochemical production) and inorganic waste (batteries, uninterruptible power supplies, accumulators, electrical cable waste, fluorescent lamps, thermometers, spent solutions of acids and alkalis) in Maradykovskoye.
