The head of the European Commission could be the German Defense Minister. This is the first time a woman has been nominated to this post.

The European Council has agreed on the nominations of the future heads of the institutions of the European Union. German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen has been nominated for the post of head of the European Commission, according to the website of the Council.

It was proposed to make Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel the President of the European Council, and the Spanish politician Josep Borrell was nominated for the post of head of EU diplomacy. Christine Lagarde, the manager of the International Monetary Fund, can head the European Central Bank. In connection with the nomination, Lagarde temporarily resigned as head of the IMF.

Now the candidates must be approved by the new composition of the European Parliament, which was formed after the elections on May 23-26. The EU summit opened on June 30 and was suspended for the night of July 1. Due to the lack of agreement on the nominees, the summit was postponed until the next day.

Ursula von der Leyen has been the German Minister of Defense since 2013. She became the first woman in this position, and now the first woman to be proposed to be the head of the European Commission.
