Baikal: The Government may allow Russian Railways to cut down the forest near the lake

The Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation prepared amendments for the Law "On the Protection of Lake Baikal". They will allow the "Russian railways" (Russian Railways) to carry out continuous deforestation to expand the Baikal-Amur and Trans-Siberian highways. This was reported by RBC with reference to the relevant document of the department.

The Russian Railways resolution will be able to receive until 2024. Specific volumes and types of work will be determined after passing state examinations. The representative of the state monopoly emphasized that work will be carried out only in the absence of other options for placing infrastructure objects and outside the boundaries of specially protected natural zones.

According to "Infoline analysts", Russian Railways will require a deforestation from eight to ten thousand hectares of forest along the railway tracks.
