Roskomnadzor promised to start fining foreign media for “violating the principle of impartiality”

Roskomnadzor announced the preparation of amendments to Russian laws, according to which foreign media will be fined for “violating the principle of impartiality.” This is reported on the department's website.

The reason for the innovations was that the UK authorities fined the RT television channel 200 thousand pounds sterling.

“The purpose of the amendments is to bring the rules that apply to foreign media operating in Russia into line with British standards,” the statement says.

In December 2018, Roskomnadzor began an unscheduled inspection of BBC materials after the British regulator Ofcom allowed the imposition of sanctions against RT , accusing the editors of biased coverage of events in Ukraine and Syria, as well as the poisoning of former GRU colonel Sergei Skripal.

Later, the regulator convicted the BBC of broadcasting “the statements of international terrorist organizations” because of quotes from the leader of the Islamic State terrorist group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. In the spring, the department explained that they did not punish the publication because RT continues to operate in the UK.
