Cloudflare's CEO called the site a "cesspool of hate."

Security provider Cloudflare, which helps combat DDoS attacks, will stop providing services to the 8chan imageboard after the El Paso shooting. This was announced by Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince in his blog.

On August 3, 21-year-old Patrick Crusius opened fire at a Walmart supermarket. 20 people were killed and another 26 were injured. Shortly before the shooting, Crusius published a manifesto on 8chan expressing solidarity with Breton Harris Tarrant, who carried out the attack on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Tarrant also posted his manifesto on 8chan.

The owners of 8chan have already been notified of the termination of service to the site. Cloudflare will stop providing services on August 5 at 10:00 Moscow time. 8chan representatives have not commented on the situation.

The El Paso shooter specifically noted the Christchurch incident and was likely inspired by discussions on 8chan glorifying the previous massacre. The suspect in the Poway, California synagogue shooting also posted a hateful "open letter" on 8chan. The image board has repeatedly proven itself to be a cesspool of hatred.

8chan founder Fredrick Brennan thanked Cloudflare for shutting down the site: “Finally this nightmare will end.” Brennan severed ties with the imageboard in December 2018.

“Unfortunately, our actions will not affect online hate. Most likely, this will not remove 8chan from the Internet. But we made the right decision,” Prince said.

Cloudflare has stopped serving websites before. In 2017, the company refused to serve Daily Stromer, a neo-Nazi forum whose users denied the Holocaust. The site is still operating - Cloudflare's place has been taken by its competitors.
