Crimean Tatar activist with disabilities' arrest in pre-trial detention center extended until October

The Supreme Court of Crimea extended the measure of restraint for the Crimean Tatar activist Edem Bekirov. This was reported in the Crimean Solidarity Facebook group.

At the trial, the lawyer petitioned to change the measure of restraint to house arrest, referring to the health of the activist: Bekirov is a disabled person of the first group, before his arrest he suffered a heart attack and leg amputation. The lawyer also asked to interrogate the doctor Svetlana Danilova, Doctor of Medical Sciences, who could provide the court with documents substantiating the need to change the preventive measure.

In addition, the lawyer referred to the fact that on June 11, the European Court of Human Rights decided to immediately place Bekirov in a non-prison-type hospital because of the health of the accused.

Despite all this, the court extended the preventive measure until October 11, 2019.

Bekirov himself stated at the trial that no one provided him with medical assistance in the pre-trial detention center, and the food that was given in the pre-trial detention center did not suit him because of his illness. “If I had eaten what they give in the pre-trial detention center, I would have died long ago. What my family brings, released 30 kg, I stretch for a month, ”said Bekirov.

• Edem Bekirov has been in custody since December 13, 2018. He was detained early in the morning on December 12 at the entrance to Crimea and taken to the FSB headquarters in Simferopol. As People's Deputy of Ukraine Refat Chubarov wrote , the activist went to Crimea to visit his 78-year-old mother.
• According to investigators , Bekirov arrived in Crimea with a bag filled with 12 kg of TNT and 200 rounds of ammunition and asked the taxi driver to hide it. The taxi driver, according to the investigation, hid the bag, but, without waiting for it to be taken away, told the FSB everything. The activist was accused of illicit trafficking in weapons and explosives (part 2 of article 222 of the Criminal Code, part 2 of article 222.1 of the Criminal Code).
• In early August, Bekirov announced that he was being forced to testify against the chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars, Refat Chubarov, the leader of the Crimean Tatars, Mustafa Dzhemilev, and the Crimean Tatar businessman Lenur Islyamov.
