In the Trv-hunger No. 14 (283) dated July 16, 2019 , fragments of the conversation of Gennady Gorelik with Dmitry Zimin about enlightenment were published. It is mentioned that with the theme of enlightenment the “riddle of the birth of European science in the 17th century” is intertwined, and the mysterious expressions “biblical humanism” and “biblical anthropostulatory” slipped. The author explains these riddles, retelling part of the conversation designated as "<...>".
To begin with, I will weaken the perplexity of the self -interweaving of so different, it would seem, concepts, recalling that, according to V. I. Dahl, genuine education is an enlightenment of mind and heart . It is believed that the mind is a place of residence of reason and logic, and feelings and the deepest beliefs live in the heart - as self -evident truths. If someone thinks that science is subject only to reason, let him say who promoted science without faith in the cognitiveness of the world, without attracting intuition and without a sense of trust in accomplices in the process of cognition.

This mystery sharply formulated - not in the heat of the polemic, but as a questioning conclusion from his research - Joseph Nidem (1900–1995), a prominent British biochemist, who has become a famous historian of Chinese science and civilization: “Why is modern science, with its mathematization of hypotheses about nature and with its role in the creation of advanced technology, occurred only in the West at the same time Galileo, but did not develop in China, where, until the 15th century, knowledge of nature was applied to practical needs much more effective than in the West? ”
It is clear that physics is meant - the first modern science, on which we will concentrate. Galileo and Einstein called "the father of modern physics, and in fact, and all modern natural sciences." The historian of science could only add that Galileo relied on the physics of Archimedes, was inspired by the discovery of Copernicus, was supported by Kepler, and Newton developed his ideas until complete triumph.
The main events in the science of the XVII century are called a revolution, but this metaphor does not correspond to what is happening. There was no mass movement (and no masses at all). There were units - by the end of the century, dozens - involved (more, perhaps hundreds of interested) who lived in different countries of Europe. It is much more like an invention and its development. But what was invented?
The main innovations of the new - modern - physics are considered to be a support for experiment and mathematical language. These instruments, however, also owned Archimedes, not only the first real physicist, but also a great engineer and mathematician. No wonder Galileo called him "the Divine." And the need for both tools proclaimed, three centuries before Galileo, Roger Bacon.
For modern physics, the third tool was also needed - "the dumped fabrications that could bind empirical data." These are the words of Einstein, who portrayed the life of his native science scheme:
Here are the axioms of theory A - "free inventions of the human spirit, not displayed logically from empirical data." Axiom invents intuition, taking off, pushing away from the soil of empirical data E. From the axiom, for certain phenomena, specific statements from N and “land” them, comparing E.
The key difference between modern science is that its axioms - fundamental concepts and principles - do not have to be visual due to everyday experience, as in the geometry of Euclid and in Archimedes's physics. They are invisible , allying within the framework of the existing ideas, at first, even for most colleagues of the inventor.
The fruitfulness of the “illogical” idea in the knowledge of the Universe was the first to discover Copernicus, deciding to explore planetary movements “from a solar point of view” and receiving convincing consequences from the absurd idea of the movement of the Earth for that time. The take -off of Kepler's intuition is the assumption that the movements of the planets are described not by different combinations of cycles and epicics, but in some way. Both studied, in fact, only one object - the solar system, based on astronomical observations and mathematics. And both can be called fundamental astro-mathematicians .
Galileo was the first to apply inventive freedom of knowledge in physics - in the world of earthly phenomena, where active systematic experiments are possible. Based on his observations, he invented the physical concept of an invisible vacuum (contrary to the dominant philosophical prohibition of Aristotle), which allowed to discover the laws of inertia, relativity and free fall. The first two, together with the belief that the “subluestial” and “broken” worlds are subject to unified laws, helped to solve the Copernicus paradox: why people do not notice the huge speed of the earth around the sun. And in the law of free fall, Newton saw the following invisible reality - gravity and law of universal gravity.
Galileo's method has become the main engine of modern science, giving birth to new concepts for new areas of knowledge and new laws of nature. So, after Newton, the invisible-completely not visual-fundamental realities: an electromagnetic field, energy quanta, photons, quantum states, curved space-time ... All these concepts, contradicting the old “common sense”, began to create a new one. It was such invention that became the main movement of modern physics thanks to the “magnificent eight”: Copernicus, Galilee, Kepler, Newton, Maxwell, the bar, Einstein and Bor.
This method worked outside physics. The concepts of chemical atoms, biological evolution, material carriers of heredity and the movement of continents were no less “hidden-invisible-and-shaped” than Newton's gravity. A new way of invention of concepts was manifested in cases of unsuccessful inventions (phlogiston, thermal and electric “fluids”). And successful ones - together with experimental discoveries, expanded and strengthened the runway E on Einstein's scheme.
Axiomatic concepts and principles are invented much less often than already known concepts and principles for explaining new phenomena, but the amazing successes of modern science are obliged to the right to invent new - “illogical” - concepts. This right implies the belief that nature obeys deep, non -obvious, laws that a person, nevertheless, is able to comprehend, invented concepts and checking the theories based on them in experiments.
We will call this faith a fundamental cognitive optimism, since we are talking about the faith that nature is a harmonious universe standing on a certain invisible - “underground” - a foundation, nevertheless, accessible to human knowledge.

Nidem knew more than others about the numerous scientific and technical inventions of China, learned in other parts of the world or ahead of them for centuries. And his question was actually amazed that starting from the 16th century, European science has so rapidly escaped forward, and scientists in China could not or did not want to connect to new science, although the Jesuits missionaries brought European science to China, including the Copernicus system, and were quite benevolent by the Chinese emperor.
Nidem was looking for an answer to his question in socio-economic circumstances, but never found. And his colleagues historians, who knew modern science only passively, according to books, found his “question of a unique event” incorrect, historically unrequited.
It is possible to make the question of Nidham quite historical by expanding it in cultural space and time. Let us take into account that the new science easily spread to different countries of Europe, but also did not penetrate either India or the Islamic world with their strong scientific and technical traditions, of which Europeans scooped up in past centuries. In addition, all the experimental and mathematical methods of Galileo were available to Archimedes, after the death of which the ancient civilization had another six centuries in stock to get ahead of Galileo. So we come to the expanded issue of Nidem:
What prevented the ancient and medieval scientists from taking the next step after Archimedes, and scientists of the East - to join the development of modern science after Galilee and until the 20th century? Or, what helped Europeans invent modern physics and then develop it at a historically unprecedented pace?
The differences between Europe and China are much more diverse than at once from all four large civilizations - ancient, Chinese, Indian and Islamic - which differ no less than each different from the European one.
A particularly interesting example (and a hint) is given by Russia, which did not have its own scientific tradition at all, when European scientists were invited to the country, according to Peter the Great. European science surprisingly easily launched the roots in Russia, and in the 19th century, world -class fruits also appeared - the geometry of Lobachevsky and the periodic law of Mendeleev, and therefore, scientifically Russia is part of Europe.
Other tips can be found in Einstein. Recalling that in the era of the birth of modern science “the general pattern of nature was not recognized at all”, he wrote: “How much Kepler believed in such a pattern, if he suffered for decades to empirically explore the planetary movement and formulate its mathematical laws!”
Such a faith was necessary not only to the first inventors of modern science. Speaking of scientific knowledge, Einstein noted that “it is impossible to build a house or bridge without the use of building forests that are not part of the design itself,” and indicated that “moral views, a sense of beautiful and religious instincts can serve as such creative forests, helping the mental ability to come to its highest achievements.”
The word "instinct" Einstein expressed, of course, the depth of feeling, and not his biological nature. Only a very deep faith, which does not require evidence, can emotionally support during the invention of “absurd-and-logical” fundamental concepts. This role is natural to entrust the fundamental cognitive optimism described above, the source of which, however, must also be sought. And the Einstein epithet "religious" gives another hint.
Reflecting for a long time on the intriguing and businessless issue of Nidham, I shared with Dmitry Borisovich Zimin collected facts and their understanding. Some of these facts are clearly religious. For example, all the greatest inventors of fundamental concepts - the “magnificent eight” mentioned above - recognized the importance of religious tradition. And in the 19th century, it was found that a person’s chances of a Protestant culture to become an outstanding scientist several times higher than that of a person of Catholic culture.
In the discussion of these strange facts, Zimin was an ideal interlocutor, since he is a clear, open atheist, with bitter bewilderment, remembering a long line of those who wanted to look at the “belt of the Virgin” in the center of Moscow in the 21st century and other manifestations of clericalism. For him, the idea of some beneficial manifestations of religion was more than doubtful, although among his closest like-minded controlors of at least three believers. He expressed his atheistic objections directly, helping me in clarifying and justifying his own views.
His very first objection sounded like this: “In science, proof plays a huge role, and it was invented by the ancient Greeks, and, it seems, without any help of religion.”
Indeed, the great inventions of the Greeks - the geometry of Euclid and the physics of Archimedes - can be called the greatest contribution of atheism to the development of mankind. The main “trick” of these inventions is a convincing and evidence system of knowledge, based on a small number of initial concepts and axiom-statements that “do not require evidence” by virtue of their self-evidence. And the miracle of Greek philosophy and science began - three centuries before Euclid - with the question of Thales Miletsky: "What is the original of all things?" His own answer - “water” - is not as important as the question itself, to which other early philosophers were looking for their answers. Aristotle called these philosophers physicists (literally “naturalists”), because they were looking for the answers to the question of Thales without going beyond nature, without attracting super -free, that is, supernatural principles. In the current language, they can be called atheists. Subsequently, some philosophers spoke of the power and even the highest reality of the world of ideas, but the religion of the Olympic gods reigning in ancient Greece, with its myths and legends, disgraces and rituals, did not participate in the then philosophy and science, except for the persecution of inconsistent philosophers. The great achievements of the Greeks, alas, did not prevent the deaths of ancient civilization and a two-thousand-up stague in physics, up to the 17th century, when Galileo invented a completely new way of cognition: the basic concepts and axioms cannot be selected from any clear obvious evidence, but to invent new ones, pushing away from specially set experiments.
It is appropriate to emphasize here that I myself am a paratheist . So I call anyone who recognizes the historical fact that from the time of the ancients to this day, among the free-thinking people have always been both theists and atheists (I remind you that the Greek prefix “pair-” means “nearby”). In other words, theism and atheism coexist in the history of culture as ways of worldview, equal in that they are freely selected, or rather, recognized by their own thinking person.
According to the atheist (and the Nobel laureate) Vitaly Ginzburg, "the atheist completely denies the existence of God, something supernatural, something in addition to nature, considers the world to exist regardless of consciousness and primary in relation to this consciousness."
Theist , for expressing his deepest ideas about the world, is necessary the concept of something extracurricular, superfront, supernatural (God, gods, spirits, etc.). Thus, the one’s understood covers the variety of ideas from beliefs in the goblin to faith based on a certain scripture and the tradition of its interpretation.
Of course, not everyone reveals his deepest ideas about the world; And some do not look into themselves so deeply that such ideas are developed.
According to the observations of academician B.V. Raushenbach, the ability to religious worldview, like all abilities, are distributed unevenly, and about 10% of people are capable of a deep religious feeling. The rest behave “as it is customary in society” 1 . Studies of sociologists and psychologists, in my opinion, reinforce this assessment with one important addition: about the same share are deeply unbelievers . Deep teasers and deep atheists are united by an increased ability to self -knowledge, but shares them what tool of thinking prevails - intuitive or analytical.
In modern science, theists with atheists are well cooperating. There is enough work for everyone, but you can notice a certain division of labor. The fact that those few who managed to invent new fundamental concepts were theists did not at all reduce the contribution of wonderful atheists, such as Paul Dirac, Lev Landau, Richard Feynman, who built the theory of specific phenomena on the basis of the already invented fundamental concepts. To lay the path into the unknown, you need only one pioneer, and the efforts of many are needed to master the new territory.
The statistical fact is that atheists prevail among physicists. Back in the Middle Ages, they said: Tres Physici, Duo Athei , that is, "out of three physicists, two atheists." About the same proportion in the United States, where in the late 1990s they conducted a survey among physicists, mathematicians and biologists about their attitude to religion. Among the members of the US Academy of Sciences, the share of believers is 7%. This is not so little, given how narrowly the survey defined the concept of “believer”. In particular, it included faith in personal immortality (immortality of the soul), and even Newton denied this, who wrote more about the Bible than physics (he also rejected the dogma of the Trinity and the idea of the devil).
In Russia, such surveys were not conducted, but from the three outstanding Soviet physicists - the creators of the world's first hydrogen bomb and Nobel laureates - two, Igor Tamm and Vitaly Ginzburg, were atheists, and Andrei Sakharov was completely unambiguously spoke of his religious sense (and about unbelief in personal immortality).
All believers of great physicists, of course, thought in religion as freely and boldly as in science, considering themselves the right to independently interpret the text of the Bible and relate to church authorities as critical as scientific authorities. From the point of view of any church, they were all heretics. Otherwise, they simply could not say a new word in science.

Science does not need religion at all to justify its results. The Catholic priest and the outstanding astrophysicist Georges Lemeter, who opened the expansion of the universe in 1927, said that this expansion began with a large explosion said more clearly about this.
