In St. Petersburg will be a workshop about the future of artificial intelligence

What can robots? How do technologies affect modern society and politics? And who studies ethics issues? On September 12-13, 2019, a conference and a workshop about the future of artificial intelligence Global AI Narratives will be held in St. Petersburg. The event for the first time in Russia is held by the team of the Center for CFI of the University of Cambridge with the support of the greenhouse of social technologies .

In Russia, ideas about robots and smart machines are often opposed to the western approach. If these ideas differ, then how and to what extent? How does understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) affect technological progress in Russia? Within two days, representatives of the Russian and British scientific communities, developers, specialists in the field of human rights, people of the field of art will discuss these issues.

We invite specialists working or studying AI technologies interested in technological trends to take part in the event.

The event will be held in two formats - public performances on the first day and a closed workshop in the second.

On September 12, we invite everyone to public performances, a panel discussion and a general discussion of the topic with participants and spectators. Participation is free, but you need to register.

First day: Conference

Kanta Dihal, a technology researcher, the center of future intelligence at the University of Cambridge, will tell you why artificial intelligence has unprecedented global influence and the presentation of society about it is formed by the framework in which technologies are developed, accepted and regulated.

Anton Pervushin is a Russian writer and journalist, author of scientific, fantastic and popular science books. In his speech, he will tell why many AI concepts that are used by Russian robototists, futurologists and philosophers are outdated.

“Many ideas are based on the science fiction of the Golden Age, which creates a problematic discourse around AI. Electronics, a suitcase boy, is a popular Russian concept of Android, therefore it serves as an ideal example for understanding the direction and specifics of AI narrates in modern Russia. ” Anton Pervushin

In panel discussion, the speakers will discuss in an interactive format:

• What is common between Russian and English narratives about AI? Or what are their fundamental differences?
• How do these narratives affect the development of AI in the 21st century?
• What concepts of AI people should focus on?

The audience will have the opportunity to participate in discussion and ask their questions, give comments.

The workshop will be interesting if you:

What will we do on the workshop

Specialists will discuss Russian experience within the framework of four sessions:

• "History of AI in Russia";
• "Perception of AI by Russian society";
• “AI and a request for public justice”;
• "AI in political discourse."

Session 1. "History of AI in Russia"

At this session, we will immerse in the history of the technology of AI in the USSR and modern Russia. How technologies appeared and developed, how they were reflected in artistic and popular science literature over the past hundred years. We describe the idea of ​​AI in modern Russia.

Session 2. "AI and Russian Society"

At this session, we will study public discourse around the AI ​​technology in Russia with an emphasis on how society understands technology.

Speakers will discuss the discourse in AI in a political context. Together we will study the influence of technology on Russian society in a wide context, including the judicial, democratic, social systems.

This workshop is one of the ten events that the Lever Hulm Center for future intelligence (University of Cambridge) organizes as part of the Global AI Narratives project. The purpose of the project is to study how different cultures and regions perceive the risks and benefits from artificial intelligence and what affects their perception.
