Over 1.5 million people signed by the evening of Thursday evening a petition posted on the UK Parliament website with a demand to prevent the suspension of the work of the House of Commons (the lower house of the legislative body).
"The work of the parliament cannot be suspended, and it cannot be dissolved until the time provided for in Article 50 [the Lisbon Treaty of the EU] The term of [negotiations] will not be significant or the UK will not refuse to leave the European Union," the text of the petition, which was already in second place among the most popular in the history of the British parliament.
The petition was posted on the Westminster website on August 6, and it took more than 22 days, or 531 hours to overcome a mark of 10 thousand signatures. Everything changed after the Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday that he received the sanction of Queen Elizabeth II to suspend the work of the parliament until October 14, TASS reports. In just one hour after this, the collective appeal was signed by 100 thousand people, by midnight the number of signatures was 1 million, and 1.5 million for the second half of the next day.
While the record belongs to the petition submitted at the beginning of the year for the abolition of Brexit. She gained 6.1 million signatures.
According to the procedure operating in the UK, any online image that gained more than 10 thousand signatures requires an official government reaction, and after reaching a mark of 100 thousand, it should be considered in parliament. At the same time, as practice shows, a petition on Brexit, which, from the moment of the 2016 referendum, several dozen have been registered, are not able to somehow influence the process of leaving the EU.
A delay in the meetings of the parliament should enter into force no earlier than September 9th and no later than September 12 and last until October 14. At the same time, Johnson rejected the assertion that this step is aimed at preventing deputies from blocking the country's exit from the European Union without an agreement on the conditions of Brexit. Parliamentarians from the Labor Party and their colleagues from other parties, including from the Conservative camp, sharply criticized this decision, without eliminating the declaration of a vote of mistrust to the government and the convening of universal early elections. Brexit is scheduled for October 31.
We add that the British not only massively sign a petition against the suspension of the parliament, but also go to protest . In London, protests were held near the residence of the Prime Minister on Dauning Street. One of the protesters came there in the mask of Boris Johnson, holding a shovel in his hands, and installed the "grave" with the inscription "resting with the world, British democracy."
Near the parliament, the demonstrators blocked the road, demanding to "stop the coup." The protesters held in their hands posters directed against Boris Johnson and sang "No One Voted for Boris" ("No one voted for Boris"). “We are here in order to withstand the revolution of Boris Johnson. We have a representative democracy, and, having suspended the parliament, you are depriving the people of democratic rights,” said Amelia Wamak, deputy leader of the Green Party, calling Johnson's decision to neglect parliamentary procedures. Another participant in the rallies called Brexit "the highest level xenophobia." In the crowd, there were no shocks.
The protests also took place in Manchester and Edinburgh. Against the background of news about the suspension of the work of the parliament, the British pound rate fell to $ 1.2196. A day earlier, it cost 1.23 dollars.
According to the survey, only 28% of the British support the step of the Prime Minister. 47% opposed the suspension of the work of the parliament in such conditions for a whole month. In total, 5.7 thousand people took part in the survey.
