Hurricane Dorian strengthens to Category 1 storm and will reach Florida by evening of September 2

Hurricane Dorian in the Atlantic Ocean has strengthened to Category 5 (maximum) on the Saffir-Simpson scale . According to the Associated Press, wind speeds at its center reach 260 kilometers per hour.

The hurricane is expected to reach the Bahamas within a few hours and the coast of Florida by the evening of September 2.

• Typically, no more than one Category 5 hurricane forms in the Atlantic per season.
• In 2018, Category 5 Hurricane Michael killed 74 people and caused an estimated $25 billion in damage.
• Due to the approach of Hurricane Dorian, US President Donald Trump has cancelled his participation in events in Poland dedicated to the beginning of World War II.
