Former French President Jacques Shirak died

Former President and Prime Minister of France, former mayor of Paris Jacques Shirak died at the 87th year of his life. This was reported by the agency France Press with reference to the message of his family.

Jacques Shirak headed France for 12 years - from 1995 to 2007. Prior to that, he worked for the mayor of Paris for 18 years and headed the French government under President Valerie Zhiskar d'Esten and Francois Mitteran.

Shirak took up a political career in the early sixties, took part in the election campaigns of Charles de Gaulle and Georges Pompidu, under the presidency of the latter he became the Minister of Agriculture, after the death of Pompid in 1974 he became the leader of the Gollist Union of Democrats in defense of the republic and received the position of prime minister.

He was dismissed, went to the opposition, in 1977 he became the first mayor of Paris in 100 years, he again headed the government under President Mitterans, becoming the first politician in the history of France, heading the Cabinet of Ministers under two different presidents.

In 1995, Shirak won the presidential election. Under him, the term of office of the head of state in France was reduced, he became the last president with a seven -year period of government and the first president, who was later elected for a five -year term.

Shirak taught Russian in his youth, translated into the French "Eugene Onegin" and was good at Russia, supporting democratic transformations in the country in the 90s. The politician who took part in the Algerian War in his youth became the first president of France to visit the independent Algeria. He turned out to be the first president of the country, found guilty of corruption.
