Architecture: sauna in the desert

“The idea was so crazy that we simply could not help but do this,” the authors of the project say.

The Finnish studio JKMM Architects has united with the organization Sauna On Fire for the construction of a wooden sauna, which has become part of the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert.

“We wanted to show the sauna - both as a typical building and as a special experience - to other participants in the festival, because it so deeply reflects Finnish identity and culture. In addition, the idea to build a sauna in the desert was so crazy that we simply could not help but do this, ”the representative of JKMM Architects explained .

During the festival, more than a thousand visitors visited the sauna. According to the authors of the project, it fit perfectly into the theme of Burning Man this year - “metamorphoses”.

Saunas are purification and restoration, both physical and spiritual.

For the construction of the pavilion, called Steam of Life ( the play of words - “pairs of life” or “energy of life”, approx.tj ), used a minimum of materials. Between woody plates, gaps were left to penetrate the natural light.

In addition to the entrance area and steam room, the pavilion included a round atrium in the center - for the rest and relaxation necessary after the sauna.
