Russian cinema lost 20% of box office revenue

Russian films grossed 9 billion rubles in the first nine months of 2019, which is 20% less than in the same period a year earlier, Vedomosti reports , citing data from the Film Distributor's Bulletin.

• Box office receipts for foreign films in Russian cinemas increased by a quarter and amounted to 31.3 billion rubles over 9 months.
• Two foreign films collected more than 3 billion rubles: "The Lion King" and "Avengers: Endgame".
• Eight more foreign films have surpassed the billion ruble mark.

The share of domestic films in Russian distribution from January to September decreased to 22% from 31% year-on-year.

• Only one Russian film was able to earn more than a billion rubles: the war drama “T-34,” with box office receipts of 2.3 billion rubles.
• By the end of the year, the sequel to “Policeman from Rublyovka” will probably gross a billion, according to film distributors interviewed by Vedomosti.
• Russians spent 40.3 billion rubles on movie tickets in the first three quarters of 2019, 9.6% more than last year.
