The ex-head of the FSB department of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Lieutenant-General Alexander Kalashnikov, became the director of the Federal Penitentiary Service, according to the agency's website.
The former head of the Federal Penitentiary Service, Gennady Kornienko, resigned in October 2019 after serving in the position for seven years. Among his possible replacements was the ex-FSB officer Vadim Balanin, who joined the Federal Penitentiary Service in 2012.
According to Kommersant, the resignation of Kornienko was sought by the FSB and the Investigative Committee, starting cases against his subordinates. Two deputies of Kornienko received real terms in cases of bribery. The official reason for Kornienko's resignation is the achievement of the age limit for service (65 years).
