On the afternoon of October 21, the first tram tests with an engine on hydrogen fuel elements were held in St. Petersburg. The developers say that this model is economical, autonomous and is not dangerous for nature. This was reported in Gorelektrotrans.
The first test took about 10 minutes.
In the tram, electricity production should be carried out by an electrochemical generator using hydrogen and surrounding air. Hydrogen is contained in cylinders on board the layout. For a long movement of the model, a gas station of the hydrogen station is required.
The concept of a tram on a hydrogen engine that travels without a contact network has been developed since 2016. The Gorelektrotrans says that the start of the tests displays the implementation of the project “to the finish line”. In case of successful completion of the tests, it is planned to move on to a larger production of such trams.
The development of the project is engaged in the FSUE “Krylovsky State Scientific Center”, “Gorelektrotrans” and the Central Research Institute of Ship Electrical Engineering and Technology. The LM-68M model is taken as a platform.
