This action has become the most massive for the country since 1988, when a million Chileans joined the rally against the then ruler Augusto Pinochet. The current protests began on October 6, after a slight increase in public transport prices, but their real reason was the structural problems of the Chilean economy. The protests grew into riots and clashes with the police, in which 18 people died and about two and a half thousand were detained. The Chile government canceled the increase in travel prices and promised to develop a program of economic reforms, but the protests have not yet subsided.
