Primorye: Deputies opposed the return of direct elections of mayors

The deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the Primorsky Territory, at the proposal of the regional administration, refused to consider the bill on the return of direct elections of the heads of cities and districts, adopted by them in the first reading in 2018, Interfax -Far East said .

At the next meeting of the Legislative Assembly, 36 out of 37 deputies opposed the consideration of the bill.

Chairman of the Committee on Regional Policy, Legality and International Cooperation Dzhambulat Tekiyev motivated the refusal to return direct elections by the fact that municipalities in 2020 would be transformed into municipal districts, and this will lead to additional costs for the elections.

"These transformations will result in the formation of a significant number of local governments of newly formed municipalities, an increase in the number of election campaigns and the allocation of additional financial resources from the regional budget for their implementation," Tectiev said.

In November 2018, the region’s Legislative Assembly in the first reading adopted a bill on the return of direct elections of the heads of cities and regions, which was introduced by Governor Oleg Kozhemyako. According to the draft law, the municipality could choose the best way to choose the chapter - either direct elections, or the existing order now with the competition.

Direct elections of the heads of city districts m of municipalities in the region have not been held since 2014.
