Petersburg: a historian, archaeologist and anthropologist Lev Klein died

In St. Petersburg, the Soviet and Russian historian, archaeologist, anthropologist, philologist, former political prisoner Leo Klein died. He was 92 years old. Professor, Doctor of Historical Sciences Klein was one of the founders of the European University in St. Petersburg.

Lev Klein was born on July 1, 1927 in Vitebsk. In 1951, he graduated from the History Department of Leningrad State University. After that, he worked as a school teacher, participated in several archaeological expeditions. Klein taught two decades at the Department of Archeology of Leningrad University. He published scientific works not only in the Soviet Union, but also in the West.

As a historian and archaeologist Klein defended the so -called Norman theory about the role of Scandinavians and, in particular Rurikovich, in the formation of Rus'. In Soviet times, this theory was considered antipatriotic, dangerous and harmful. According to Klein, it was for these scientific views that he was repressed.

In 1981, the USSR State Security Committee initiated a criminal case against a scientist, and he was convicted. After the release in 1982, Klein was devoid of a degree, he was not hired and did not allow him to teach. Only during the years of perestroika, he began teaching abroad, and after the collapse of the USSR he became a professor of St. Petersburg State University and taught at the European University.

In 2010, an autobiographical book was published "It is difficult to be glue." It included an interview with different years, fragments of books and personal correspondence.
