A court in Taganrog extended the detention in a pre-trial detention center for a defendant in the Hizb ut-Tahrir case for three months.

The judge of the Taganrog city court of the Rostov region, Georgy Serebryanikov, extended the detention of Seyran Murtaza, a person involved in the case of the second Simferopol Hizb ut-Tahrir group, for three months. This was reported on the Facebook page of the Crimean Solidarity movement.

The man was left in a pre-trial detention center until February 15, 2020. This decision was explained by the need to conduct a large amount of investigative and procedural actions. In addition, according to the prosecution, if a milder preventive measure is chosen, Murtaza, realizing the punishment in the form of a long prison term, provided for by the article incriminated to him, may hide from the investigating authorities.

The meeting was held behind closed doors. The petition of the lawyer Murtaza Svetlana Oleksenko to hold the meeting in open court rejected. Judge Serebryanikov also refused to let the accused out of the "aquarium".

Seyran Murtaza and thirteen other Crimean Tatar activists have been held in a pre-trial detention center since March 28, 2019 due to suspicions of participation in the activities of the religious organization Hizb ut-Tahrir. Murtaza is charged with Part 2 of Art. 205.5 of the Criminal Code (participation in the activities of a terrorist organization).

• On June 18, the North Caucasian Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced five defendants in the first Hizb ut-Tahrir case in Simferopol to prison terms ranging from 12 to 17 years.
• Hizb ut-Tahrir is recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. In this regard, criminal cases are initiated in different regions of the country, while the defendants are sentenced to various terms in a strict regime colony only on the basis that they met in apartments, read religious literature and spread their ideas.
  According to a number of experts, Hizb ut-Tahrir was unlawfully recognized as a terrorist organization, since its members in Russia did not prepare or carry out terrorist acts.
