Former President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev spoke out against the introduction of a new memorial date – the day of the end of the Great Stand on the Ugra River , Interfax reports.

“We need to not revise history, especially with inept hands, but we need to unite in the name of solving current problems,” said Shaimiev.

Shaimiev did not rule out that the standoffs between the opposing sides, as on the Ugra River in 1480, were attempts to peacefully resolve the conflict and became stages on the path of the peoples of the Russian Federation to unity.

In June 2019, a State Duma deputy from the Kaluga region introduced a bill to the State Duma to establish November 11 as the day of the overthrow of the Mongol-Tatar yoke. The government issued a positive opinion on the document, Tatarstan opposed it. After that, the draft law was postponed in the State Duma.
The Kaluga governor claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin liked the idea, but the head of state’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov did not confirm this.
