New compounds from the sea sponge in the future will help to treat cancer

Scientists of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) have developed a new way to synthesize derivatives of Fasclisin - a pigment based on derivatives of a sea sponge with antitumor effect.

The new method made it possible to obtain a sufficient amount of two substances with complex names-3-bromfaccapasin and 3.10-dibromfaccapasin. Researchers already knew about their existence, but still could not get in the amount suitable for study. On their basis, scientists first synthesized two new compounds-14-Bromreticulatate and 14-Bromreticulatine. These substances may be useful for cancer treatment.

For example, 14-bromreticulatine affects the bacteria of a praying stick, resistant to many types of antibiotics, and also leads to the death of skin cancer, rectum cancer and prostate cancer.

The connection of 3.10-dibromfaccapasis suppresses the metabolism of prostate cancer cells in relatively low concentrations. The substance has a wide potential of action, so in the future it can be used for the selective treatment of malignant tumors.

However, it’s too early to talk about the creation of a new medicine . Based on the results obtained, scientists plan to synthesize the new series of derivatives of Farmasin and conduct tests on mice. The results of the experiments will show how close the researchers came to the creation of an effective drug.

The main volume of studies associated with the synthesis of targeted formations was performed by the graduate student of the School of Natural Sciences of the FEFU Polina Smirnova. The work was attended by scientists of the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Far Eastern Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Biosnota Center for the ground biota of East Asia of the Russian Federation of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the University Clinic of Hamburg-Mopendorf.

The researchers first allocated Fascaplysinopsis SP from the sea sponge. In 1988. This compound has a wide range of biological activity: it effectively inhibits the growth of various types of tumor cells, exhibits antibacterial, antifungal and even analgesic effects. However, the high toxicity of Faskiplizin in relation to healthy cells limits its use as a drug.
