Gazprom finally lost Naftogaz in the court of Sweden
The Court of Appeal in Sweden rejected Gazprom’s complaint to revise the decision of the Stockholm arbitration in a dispute with the Ukrainian Naftogaz on gas supplies to Ukraine, Yuri Vitrenko, executive director of Naftogaz, wrote on his Facebook.
“A complete victory! Ukraine wins again,” Vitrenko said. The company has reasons for joy: the decision of the court of appeal cannot be appealed.
The decision was made on the first of three complaints. The court’s decision partially resumes the obligations of Ukraine “Bay or Pay” under the expiring contract “Gazprom” with “Naftogaz”. The Russian company demanded from the Ukrainian $ 56 billion for gas inexpensive gas in 2012-2017.
The decisions of two more cases in court, meanwhiles, will be adopted in 2020.
Last week, Gazprom suggested that Naftogaz of Ukraine extend the current 10-year transit contract to Europe, which expires on December 31, or conclude a new agreement for a year for a year. A prerequisite for this, the Russian side considers a mutual abandonment of claims in international arbitration and the termination of all trials.
We talked in detail about the positions of the parties and prospects of transit here . An alternative to gas supplies through Ukraine is the Nord Stream 2, but they do not have time to introduce it on time.
