The professor closes the door

In the office of 204 of the Norris Hall educational building, as in almost all audiences of the Virzhinsky Polytechnic University, there was nowhere to hide, except behind overturned desks, and the door did not even lock the door. Non -stop sounds of shots, gradually approaching, came from the corridor and neighboring classes for several minutes. The killer could be on the threshold at any time, and the 76-year-old professor of mechanics Liviu Librescu decided, which for some reason did not occur to anyone in the building: he ordered students to jump from the window, and he rested his back on the door.

Manifesto

Two days after the joke in Norris-Hall, the NBC News TV channel in New York came a parcel from Blaxberg, a city where the campus of the Virzhinsky Polytechnic University is located. Inside, the journalists found video clips and photos, which captured a short -cut, dressed in a body armor and posing with pistols of twenty years old. Somewhere he threatened them in the cell, somewhere he held at the temple, and in one photo he put a hunting knife to his neck. In the video clips, the young man expressed his rage, resentment and desire to deal with some offenders.

Together with all this, NBC News employees also received an 1800 -word manifesto.

They doubted for a long time, but in the end they published only two out of 25 minutes video, seven out of 43 photos and 37 suggestions of the manifesto:

The author of the document compared himself to Moses and Jesus Christ, and sprinkled with imaginary opponents with epithets like “hedonists”, “Christian Nazis”, “descendants of Satan”, “apostles of sin”, “sadistic snobs”, in abundance using the word Fuck.

Later, the police found that the young man methodically recorded himself on the video for a month - in the van, rented, as well as in the room of the local hotel - the lamp that had fallen into the frame indicated this: exactly the same were in the hotel rooms. It is not known when the killer recorded the manifesto and how long he worked on it - on the day of the joke, he deleted his mail account on the university domain with all the data. At 7:30, her friend came to the Hilsher room, with whom they had to go a couple of chemistry together. She told the police that Emily was abandoning the guy just yesterday, - Karl Thornhill, a student of a neighboring university. He owned weapons, loved to practice in shooting, and this instantly made him suspect. The police rushed along the trail of the boyfriend of Hilsher and soon stopped him on the highway: Thornhill rode home to the neighboring town. They took a test for traces of gunpowder, but the result was negative. Tornhill was not that man, and the police were in the wrong place.

Once at such a party, he grabbed a penknife, ran into the girls' room and stuck it into the carpet in front of the amazed eyewitnesses. More than Cho was not invited anywhere. This became known to the university administration, but having a penknife is not prohibited with you, and there was nothing more dangerous for Cho, and no disciplinary measures were applied to it.

The neighbors noticed that the young man took medicines, but did not know which ones. He loved to listen to the same song on the repeat - the Shine post -grange group Collective Soul, and even wrote a line from this composition on the wall of the room: “Teach me to say, teach me to share, tell me where to go.”

Once, his son Hi called Andy Koch during the holidays on thanksgiving and stated that he was “resting with Vladimir Putin in North Carolin,” adding that he grew up with the Russian president in Moscow. “I am sure this is impossible, the son of Hee,” the student answered.

Hearing from Koch about the oddities of Cho, Bowman was frightened and again turned to the police. They talked again with Cho. In 1992, when the son of Hi was eight years old, his family in search of a better life moved from South Korea to the United States, where she soon settled in the town of Senterville. The son of Hi and his older sister Sun Kung went to the American school and quickly mastered English.

In the USA, the Hi son felt, at first glance, not bad. He loved to play basketball with himself, watch TV and go through computer games like Sonic the Hedgehog. He had ordinary interests for a teenager, which is known from the questionnaire , filled with the university after years: “I like to watch talk shows and listen to alternative radio stations, I love action films. My favorite film is “X -Men”, beloved actor - Nicholas Cage, favorite book - Night Over Water, Favorite Group - U2, Favorite Sports - Basketball, Favorite Team - Portland Trail Blazers, Favorite Food - Pizza, Favorite Color - Green. ”

To the sixth class, its isolation and the missing facial expression began to cause concern among teachers. Parents took his son to a psychiatrist who diagnosed him with sociophobia (“social anxious disorder”), as well as to an art therapist.

Since the boy did not talk to anyone, the therapist invited him to express himself in his work. Cho began to sculpt from clay houses without windows and doors. Soon he sometimes began to look into the eyes that the woman regarded as a step towards a healthier state of the psyche.

But after a couple of years, alarming changes have been outlined - Cho began to draw caves and tunnels. This in itself would not be scary if it were not for the sudden signs of depression. The therapist Cho replied that he did not think about suicide or something like that, but a month later-April 20, 1999-there was a mass murder at the Columbine school. Then two young people killed 17 people. After that, in the lesson of the English letter, the son of Hi wrote an essay where he expressed thoughts about the repetition of events in Columbine.

Mother went around all the churches in the district, praying that her boy learned to communicate

Parents were shocked from the essay and again took the son of Hi to the psychiatrist who diagnosed his selective mutism - the inability to talk with people in certain situations - and a single episode of a large depressive disorder. Hi son began to take antidepressants, soon cheerful, began to smile more often and stopped going to consultations. “Everything is in order with me,” he told his parents, stopping medication.

Mother tried in every possible way to stir up her son. After moving to the United States, she became religious and went around all the churches in the district, praying for her boy to learn to communicate. In the Christian Church, a single mind, where she visited, even suggested that the teenager was obsessed with demons, and the local pastor Lee proposed to cope with the trouble "with the help of spiritual power." True, the son of Hu by that time had already gone to the university and did not come to church. By the time of his age, the Hanga, in the age of his age, surrendered and decided that she needed to let her son behave as it is convenient.

When the question arose of receipt, the school assistant strongly recommended a small college for the young man, but he chose the Virgin Polytechnic University - a huge university, in which 26,000 students studied then and whose campus was spread out in one square kilometer. The school sent to Polytechnic data on academic performance by the son of Hi, but did not transmit any information about his mental state. He passed the standard SAT exam for admission to higher educational institutions and was accepted in 2003.

Cho returns to the university

At 9:40, having killed Emily Hilsher and her neighbor in Blok, sending a parcel with his manifesto, photos and videos to the New York TV channel, Cho went to Norris Hall, wrapped up door locks, then climbed to the second floor, reached the office of 206, where there was a pair of design for hydraulicists, and opened shooting from two pistols. Такое самоощущение жертвы миллиарда несправедливостей и одновременно вселенского мстителя, параноидальное мышление и чувство социальной изоляции, как у Чо, не уникальны . В американской судебной психиатрии для подобных мстителей, склонных к тому же к милитаристской эстетике, есть даже специальный термин — « псевдокоммандо ». Сын Хи был одержим свирепой ненавистью и одновременно завистью к человечеству. Он долго пытался бороться со своими чувствами, но в итоге подошёл к точке невозврата, которую он сам осознавал: «Когда пришло время, я сделал это. Я должен был», — резюмировал он в манифесте.

11 минут, 174 патрона

В 9:51 16 апреля 2007 года Чо Сын Хи выстрелил себе в голову в кабинете 211. Через несколько минут его обнаружили полицейские, а медики начали оказывать раненым первую помощь. Рано утром на следующий день президент Джордж Буш обратился к нации из Белого дома с сообщением о случившемся и соболезнованиями. Стрельба в «Норрис-холле» продолжалась около 11 минут. За это время убийца израсходовал 174 патрона, убил 32 человека и ранил 17, устроив таким образом самый массовый университетский шутинг за всю историю США.

Теперь в центре кампуса Вирджинского политехнического университета, на огромном зелёном поле «Дрилл филд», полукругом стоят 32 камня в честь 32 погибших в стрельбе, устроенной корейским студентом. Каждый год 16 апреля там проходят молитвенные стояния, бдения при свечах и прочие мемориальные мероприятия.

Университет также ведёт сайт , где каждый желающий может написать слова скорби и поддержки, и другой сайт — с биографиями всех погибших. Студентам посмертно выдали дипломы по тем специальностям, на которые они учились. Документы передали их семьям на ежегодной официальной церемонии.

Жене профессора Либреску, спасшего ценой своей жизни десятерых учащихся, передали Большой крест Румынии — высшую национальную гражданскую награду «за научные достижения и героизм». Эмили Хаас, подхватившая телефонную трубку у раненого в кабинете французского Колина Годдарда, осталась в живых, как и сам Годдард. Он получил от Чо Сын Хи несколько пулевых ранений, но всё же выжил и спустя месяцы лечения и реабилитации полностью выздоровел и снял о своих переживаниях фильм Living for 32.

«Он задуман как позитивный обнадёживающий фильм, чтобы показать другим людям, что иногда в твоей жизни случаются безумные события, но они не должны определять тебя. Что ты будешь делать после этого, в конце концов, и определяет, кто ты есть на самом деле», — сказал Годдард.

Родители стрелка до самого дня шутинга не знали ни о диагнозах, которые поставили ему в психиатрической клинике в Сент-Олбансе, ни о его конфликтах с преподавателями и студентами. Они сказали расследовательской комиссии, что будут вечно оплакивать погибших. С тех пор о них ничего не было слышно. Сестра Чо Сын Хи успешно окончила Принстонский университет и теперь работает на Госдепартамент США.

К мемориалу жертвам трагедии люди до сих пор приносят письма, в которых в том числе признаются в противоречивых чувствах по отношению к Чо Сын Хи — прощении, сожалении и даже любви. Многие уверены , что он не имел ни малейшего представления о том, что творил, борются со своим гневом, жалеют , что он не познал Божьей любви, а также напоминают: «Ты разбил наши сердца, но не сломил наш дух».
