The artistic director of the Theater "Contemporary" Galina Volchek died

The artistic director of the Moscow Contemporary Theater, People's Artist of the USSR Galina Volchek died, write RIA Novosti with reference to the theater’s statement. She was 86 years old.

Volchek was urgently hospitalized with bilateral inflammation of the lungs on Tuesday, December 24. The theater did not officially report details about her health status.

Volchek was born in 1933, her father was director and film operator Boris Volchek, mother - screenwriter Vera Mayina. After graduating from school-studio. Nemirovich-Danchenko Galina Volchek in 1955, together with other eminent graduates-Oleg Efremov, Oleg Tabakov, Lilia Tolmacheva and then her husband Evgeny Evstigneev participated in the creation of the theater studio, which later became the Maintenance Theater.

Already in 1972, Volchek became the main director of “Contemporary”, and in 1989 - his artistic director. In this position, she remained until today. Volchek put the last performance in 2018. In total, during the leadership of the theater, she staged more than 30 performances, many of which became significant. In 1978, the “Contemporary” reached the world level: in the Houston theater “Alley” the director set the “echelon” by Mikhail Roshchin, breaking through the cultural blockade between the USA and the USSR. Later, in 1989, she staged the first performance about the Stalinist repressions “Cool Route” according to the autobiographical novel Evgenia Ginzburg.

Volchek also starred in popular Soviet films - for example, “Watch out of the car”, “King Lire” and “Autumn Marathon”.
