The world has become less free in 10 years

Russia was not free, and remains. Only the indicators still worsened.

Ten years ago, Freedom House warned of a new trend: after a long period of democratization, the level of freedom was reduced all over the world for three years in a row. Since then, the world has become less free every year.

In 2009, Indonesia , Hungary and Mali were considered “free”, now experts recognize them “partially free”. Nicaragua , Thailand , Turkey and Venezuela moved to the category of "not free". The Internet becomes less free, since governments are increasingly using social networks to monitor their citizens and disseminate misinformation. Freedom of the press is also at risk.

However, there were also improvements: the cat-d'Ivoire became “partially free”, and Senegal became “free”. The most radical changes occurred in Tunisia: as a result of the Arab spring, it became “free” from the “not free”.

And what about Russia ? For 10 years, according to Freedom House, little has changed in the country: it was not free , and remains , only the indicators still worsened .
