The damage to the global economy from deliberate Internet disconnections, mainly by governments of different countries, reached $ 8.05 billion in 2019, the TOP10VPN company published such calculations. According to her assessment, the cost of Internet shutdowns for the global economy has increased by 235% since 2016.

Last year it has become a record in the number of such disconnects - 122 in 21 countries. It cost Iraq most expensive: the country's economy lost $ 2.3 billion. It is followed by Sudan, India, Venezuela and Iran.

In financial terms, the losses affected not only the formal economy, but also informal, especially in the least developed countries. That is why, as well as due to indirect consequences (loss of trust by investors and unstable development), the authors consider their assessment of conservative: it does not take into account long-term losses from the Internet.

Most of the incidents related to the complete blocking of the Internet in any country or its large region, as well as with restrictions on individual social networks, are caused by the desire of governments to control the information. Typically, such actions of the authorities become a response to protests or riots, especially during the elections.

According to the duration of the shutdown of the Internet, the leaders of Myanmar leads, where the inhabitants of the states of the Rakhine and the rank did without entering the World Network for 203 days. Close -ups of children (197 days) and some regions of India are close (175 days). In Sudan, without the Internet, 65 days cost, and the rest of the locks lasted much less: from 7.5 to 456 hours.
