According to the publication, Golunov learned about this from an investigator from the Investigative Committee, who summoned the journalist for questioning on January 20.

The day before, on January 13, the correspondent received for the first time an official notification of the initiation of a case based on his application. It turned out that the case was opened under paragraph “c” of Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code (exceeding official powers causing grave consequences), which implies up to 10 years in prison.

Golunov himself was surprised by this qualification, because the other two paragraphs of this article sound like “with the use of violence or with the threat of its use” and “with the use of weapons or special means.” “There was the use of violence, there was illegal use of special means, there were grave consequences - uh?” - the journalist wrote .

The investigator was detained in June 2019. As Golunov said, the police planted drugs on him. A criminal case was opened against the journalist for attempted sale of narcotic substances on a large scale (part 3 of article 30, paragraph “d”, part 4 of article 228.1 of the Criminal Code) and was sent under house arrest.
