In Tyumen, the arrests of ten persons involved in the Hizb ut-Tahrir case were extended

The Central District Court of Tyumen extended the arrests of ten local residents accused in the case of the terrorist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir for three months. This was reported by Znak with reference to Jamilya Magomedova, the wife of one of the accused Farrukh Makhkamov.

“The trial took place on January 14. The husband did not admit guilt at the trial; they didn’t want to hear about torture,” the publication quotes Magomedova’s story. “I wrote statements and complaints about torture a month ago, but they still haven’t taken any measures. Apparently, they are waiting for the traces to disappear, because if there are no traces, then there is no evidence. The other day I went to the military investigative department [at the Tyumen garrison], where mine and the lawyer’s complaints were sent. The investigators don’t want to do much work on this matter, and they didn’t want to answer; in a word, they kicked me out.”

In mid-November 2019, ten Muslims were searched . They were accused of creating and participating in a terrorist organization (parts 1 and 2 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code). A few days after the searches, the detainees were sent to the Tyumen pre-trial detention center.

It was reported that one of the defendants in the case, Shakhboz Makhmudov, was tortured with electric shock during searches. Another detainee, Farrukh Makhkamov, already in the pre-trial detention center, through a lawyer, said that he was tortured with electric shock for about 5 hours, and was also threatened with sexual violence, which is why he had to sign the papers required by investigators.

• The Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir was recognized as a terrorist organization by decision of the Supreme Court. However, a number of experts from human rights organizations believe that there is no reason for this, since members of Hizb ut-Tahrir were not found to be involved in committing or preparing terrorist attacks. Members of this party are accused of terrorism solely on the basis of party activities: meetings, reading literature.
• The Memorial Human Rights Center has published an updated list of those accused of involvement in Hizb ut-Tahrir. As of December 30, 2019, 321 people were included in it.
