Participants in the summit in Berlin to resolve the conflict in Libya agreed to observe the ban on the supply of weapons to this North African country. Summing up the results of the International Conference in Berlin on Sunday, January 19, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the results of the meeting with “significant progress” on the way to peaceful settlement.
The summit participants agreed to stop military support for the parties to the conflict in Libya. The document was signed by representatives of 16 countries and organizations. The negotiation participants unanimously admitted that the protracted conflict in the North African country could not be resolved by military means.
The head of the German government emphasized that the Berlin conference is "this is only the first step in the long process." In the near future, the first negotiations will have to be held on the preparation of a long -term truce in Libya, where the ceasefire is currently operating.
For this, a commission will be created, which will include five representatives of the parties conflicting in Libya - the head of the Government of the National Consent (PNS) of Faiz Saraj and General Caliph Haftar, who does not recognize the PNS. This was announced by the UN Secretary General Antoniu Guterrish at a press conference following the results of the Berlin meeting. According to him, the first meeting of the commission will be held in the near future in Geneva.
Russia positively evaluates the results of the conference on Libya, but the differences in the approaches between the parties to the conflict are preserved, TASS notes , setting out the statement of Sergei Lavrov, who acts as the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. “In general, we consider the conference very useful. It is clear that it is ultimately deciding the Libyans themselves. It is clear that it is not yet possible to start a stable, serious dialogue between them, the differences in the approaches are too large,” Lavrov told reporters in Berlin following the conference.
