Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of Russia, a representative of United Russia, Pyotr Tolstoy on Tuesday , was elected vice speaker of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Tolstoy elevated two rounds of voting. 132 delegates PACE voted for his candidacy, against 117. Although Tolstoy did not receive the majority of the total number of delegates PACE, the voting results were sufficient to election.
Tolstoy became the 19th vice speaker of the Assembly. The remaining 18 vice-speakers were approved without voting, but opinions in PACE were divided according to the candidacy of the Russian deputy. The deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Maria Mezentseva said that "Tolstoy’s rhetoric contradicts European values" and opposed his candidacy.
The Russian delegation returned to PACA last year, after several years of absence. The restrictions introduced in connection with the annexation of Crimea were removed from it. At the current session PACE, the powers of the delegation were again challenged, but the monitoring committee voted for confirming powers.
