Karelian Petroglyphs nominated for the UNESCO heritage list

The Petroglyphs of the Onezhsky Lake and the White Sea, located in Karelia, are nominated to include UNESCO in the main list of the World Heritage Heritage, Flashnord reports .

Institute of Cultural and Natural Heritage named after D.S. Since 2017, Likhacheva has been preparing documents. The work was carried out in several stages with the involvement of foreign specialists. The developers were advised by the university professor of Bergen Tonda Lyoden (Norway), a leading expert in the field of cave art of Fenno -Scandy.

The Petroglyphs of the Lake Onega and the White Sea are a world monument of primitive art of the Neolithic era, one of the largest images in terms of the number of images and in the area of distribution of complexes of cave art. They contain historical and cultural information about the life of primitive people in Northern Fenniscanda.

The Karelia authorities want to create a museum of cave art in the open air.

The Petroglyphs of Karelia are unique examples of primitive monumental casual art. Among the North European rock images, they occupy a special position, differing in multifaceted and plot. In 2018, the Karelian Petroglyphs were included in the preliminary list of the UNESCO World Heritage.
