The Moscow City Court extended the arrest of mathematician Azat Miftakhov until April 7, 2020

The Moscow City Court extended the arrest until April 7, 2020 of mathematician Azat Miftakhov, accused of hooliganism, as reported in the court broadcast of Novaya Gazeta.

Miftakhov has been in pre-trial detention for a year, so the further extension of the preventive measure was carried out not in the district court, but in the city court.

Before the start of the hearing, Miftakhov’s lawyer Svetlana Sidorkina reported that before the court hearings, the Federal Penitentiary Service does not deliver her client directly from the pre-trial detention center to the court, but for unknown reasons takes him in a paddy wagon throughout the city, writes the telegram channel “Vestnik Buri Originals”.

The defense asked the court to place the mathematician under house arrest or to release him on bail of 1 million 994 thousand rubles, but the court sided with the prosecution and extended his detention in the pre-trial detention center until April 7.

Azat Miftakhov is a graduate student of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University, an anarchist who was arrested in a case of hooliganism committed by a group of people (Part 2 of Article 213 of the Criminal Code). According to investigators, on January 30, 2018, Miftakhov, Andrey Eikin, Elena Gorban, Alexey Kobaidze, Svyatoslav Rechkalov broke a window in the United Russia office and threw a smoke bomb there. Rechkalov and Kobaidze left Russia, their case was separated into separate proceedings.
In December 2019, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the completion of the investigation into the case of a broken window in the United Russia office.
Miftakhov was detained on February 1, and later he told his lawyer about torture with a screwdriver. For the next 11 days, his detention was extended under various pretexts.
