The Zheleznovodsk City Court of the Stavropol Territory sentenced Zubeir Khamkhoev, a participant in a rally in Magas against new borders with Chechnya, to one year and eight months in a penal colony. This was reported by the Memorial human rights center.
Khamkhoev was found guilty of using violence against a government official (Part 1 of Article 318 of the Criminal Code). The investigation insisted that he hurt two National Guard soldiers. The convict himself did not admit his guilt.
The court excluded an aggravating circumstance - the prosecutor insisted that the man was motivated by political enmity.
Since a day spent in a pre-trial detention center is counted as two days in prison, Khamkhoev will be released in February.
The Zheleznovodsk court has already handed down 11 sentences to residents of Ingushetia because of Magas’ rally.
Protests in Magas resumed in March 2019 due to a new border agreement with Chechnya. Local residents threw stones and chairs at visiting security forces who were trying to disperse the rally. Criminal cases were opened against dozens of people.
In addition, several of those arrested were accused of organizing and participating in an extremist community.
