Dima Midborn-the most noticeable bass player of the Moscow Indie Scenes, a participant in the On-The-Go and Intourist groups-has just released the debut solo album "middle-aged man". It consists of seven laconic songs and one instrumental composition, with a sad and humor describing the attitude of a townspeople for 30. The main role on the album is played by a bass gitar-a zealous, with aluminum grief.
Dima Midborn answered the questions from colta.ru.
-How did bass gitar appear in your life? Why did you choose this tool?
- It all started with the fact that I was a big fan of Morphine . Aksakals remember such a white MP 3-disk that was sold in musical stalls: there were all Morphine and Primus albums-two very “bassocentric” groups. Primus I did not understand and do not understand at all, there is too much of everything, just some kind of SLAPE. But Morphine is another matter. I really liked how the bass sounded there, and in general I liked the very “lower” sound of the group: bass, baritone-sax and vocalist's velvet voice, so, so to say, heroin Floo-all this attracts me very much, and I, of course, as I can, borrow all sorts of chips from there. In the first group, I played on an electric guitar, but when I moved to the second, it was the bass player that needed it, and I, using my friend’s bass guitar, fulfilled my long-standing desire. I played, I must say, very bad then. I don’t understand how I lasted so much time.
- You are busy in two groups - on - The - Go and Intourist. What did you lack in them that you decided to start a solo project?
- In the framework of ON - The - GO and the Intourist, I will realize the maximum of my musical capabilities, but I always wanted to try different roles of the musician. I understood a lot, standing on the side on stage; Now I want to understand what it is to stand ahead and not hide behind the vocalists.
- By the way, this is exactly the project - will you record more albums? Or will you limit yourself to one salt member?
- I think this project is cyclical: I plan three albums in the framework of “men” with a similar sound, but a slightly different approach. There is an idea to make several more albums with a completely different music; I don’t know if it will somehow be called differently.
- Tell me about the concept of the record: why is your hero - “middle -aged man”? What else is known about him? Did he survive a middle -aged crisis or is it at its very epicenter?
- A middle -aged man is such an image of a resident of a large city who suddenly stopped and found himself in the abyss of middle -aged requirements. He is perplexed how this is: he is already more than thirty-where his aspirations and desires have gone, why does he owe something to society, what is happening in the country in general, how is it already behind and what to do in general? It seems that this is a very Moscow album: it has a lot of space, silence, sardonic humor - all that the city lacks.
- In your opinion, at what moment of life the young man becomes a man?
- 30–35 years - this, of course, is a very literal equator of the average life expectancy in Russia. For everyone, this happens, of course, at different times. In my opinion - when you understand that you have to hope only for yourself.
- As it seemed, a “middle -aged man” is a conscious attempt to do with a minimum of the components: a minimum of words, instrumental parties, etc. Why did you choose this stylistic solution?
- This is due only to the speed of implementation. I had a limited tools, limited abilities and a desire to do everything ourselves.
This is a very Moscow album: it has a lot of space, silence, sardonic humor - all that the city lacks.
- How long did work on the album go? What was the hardest thing?
-From the emergence of an idea to release-a year of plus or minus a couple of months. It’s hardest to tell about yourself and everyone to write about what the album comes out. Material and entry is easy and fun.
- You have a rich experience in writing songs in English. Why did you choose Russian? Is it harder to write songs in Russian? Do you have a developed technique for writing text?
- Indeed, for many years I have been writing in a non -native language for completely different groups and people, according to different schemes. I chose the Russian language because again I wanted to try something new. I would not say that in Russian it is easier or more difficult to write. Among those who write songs, there is some kind of general idea that our language is not singing, there are many consonants in it, all this is very difficult to fit into the song, etc. I don't think so. I think all this is a matter of approach, skill, love of texts in general, healthy indifference. There are many instinctively found textual ideas on this album, and they turned out to be the most melodious. Many young Russian rock bands released albums, which are based on a giant body of the text, and they do not soar at all about the massacre, but everything sounds very folding. Bravo named after
Of course, I do not have a worked methodology: every time there is a new task that I solve.
- Your songs are compared with "strange perestroika rock." How do you feel about such an analogy? What were your musical guidelines when you started to record the album?
- To the point: I like perestroika rock and Western music of those and about those years. Vasily Shum, “Nautilus”, the early “megalopolis”, “Sounds of Mu”, Kola Beldy and its “White Island”, Production of Chernavsky for other performers.
- In some places on the album you sing like Sergey Mazaev (this is a compliment). Who are your favorite male singers in domestic pop and rock music?
- Of course, I didn’t think about Mazaev, but this is really a compliment; He seems to be very fond of costumes. An incredible attitude towards vocal among Yuri Chernavsky , who seems to despise people who are trying to sing. It is very fun to observe people who first hear, say, “Lunar Cinema” (Mikhail Boyarsky’s album with songs of Yuri Chernavsky. - Ed. ). I really like Butusov: of course, he is Russian David Silvian.
- Almost simultaneously with a “middle -aged man”, a new album on - the - go - what was your role in his recording? Was it difficult to combine?
- On the new album on - The - Go, I finally for the first time with the group was engaged in music: I used to participate only in writing texts with Yura, vocalist. In some songs, he composed the bass, sometimes it turned out to come up with something in Jeme. For ON - The - GO is as unusual as possible. It is cool that the dude suddenly took and opened to the new. I respect them very much for it. Combining everything is very difficult, albums with diametrically opposite approaches. Every year it is becoming increasingly difficult to combine, but at the same time more interesting and more fun.
-Finally, tell me about the bass gitar, with the help of which the album was recorded. What model? How long have you been playing on it? What is her character?
- This is an “improved” first bass, which was bought at the end of 2009. Japanese copy Fender JAZZ 1987, it was written on it Fernandes Burny Bass , but the font was Fender. In the musical world, this is something like Adibas or Nice . For the successful implementation of my idea to write this album (as well as the ideas on the sound in the “Intourier”), I needed a non -lady bass. Well, so it coincided that the master who made me another instrument and which I always read everything - Sergey Makhno Chapovsky began to make aluminum vultures for guitars for a variety of groups: Pasha Yeremeyev from the Ussy group has three (!) In the “Porn films” group. I really wanted myself such a bar on the bass, and even asked to make it without frets. It turned out great. I think that if mice-rockers from Mars existed, they would play on something like that.
