Luxembourg became the first country in the world with free public transport

Luxembourg has abolished public transport fares from 29 February. As the authorities of Luxembourg emphasized, this is the first case in the world when public transport became free on the territory of the whole country.

It is expected that such a measure will reduce traffic congestion, as well as save each household in Luxembourg about 100 euros per year.

Prior to the abolition of public transport fares in Luxembourg, only 32% of journeys to work were by bus and 19% by train. For example, in Paris, 68.6% of commuting is by public transport.

Public transport ticket revenue in Luxembourg was around 41 million euros per year, about 8% of the total budget.
