Yuri Dmitrieva was first arrested in 2016. He was accused of making pornography with the participation of the adopted daughter. Almost two years ago, the court in Petrozavodsk fully justified the historian. Then the examination did not find pornography in the pictures of the child. The court considered that Dmitriev took off his daughter to control the instructions of the guardianship authorities. Later, the Supreme Court of Karelia canceled this decision. The investigation provided an audio recording of the conversation, where the girl allegedly claims that the adopted father touched her, "and this contact had a sexual character." According to the human rights center "Memorial", "Medical examination and psychological and psychiatric examination of the girl did not reveal any signs of violence in relation to her or psychological trauma."

In 2018, the second case was received against Dmitriev. Now he is accused of rape. The historian was deprived of the right to custody over the adopted daughter, who in the case passes the victim.

Dmitriev was supported by more than 200 cultural figures, science, human rights activists, journalists and politicians. They believe that a “dirty” campaign is organized against Dmitriev, with the help of which society is trying to create a hatred of a researcher of Stalinist repressions and put pressure on the court.
