45 candidates were running for the new composition of the City Council of the Sortavala, which consists of 15 deputies. Observers reported massive violations during voting. They drew attention to the discrepancies between the total number of ballots, which were transferred from the territorial election commission to the district commission for voting, and the number of ballots in the final protocols of these commissions. They recorded attempts by some precinct commissions to correct the numbers in the protocols.

According to the results of the elections, 12 of the 15 deputy mandates went to candidates from the United Russia party, one received a candidate from the Communist Party, and two more - self -nominates. "Fair Russia" refused to recognize the results of the vote.

The former City Council in the Sortaval was dissolved by the authorities of Karelia in December. The formal reason for this was "the fact of non -conduct by the Council of the Sortavalsky city settlement of the meeting for three months in a row." The dissolution of the deputy corps was preceded by a local political crisis, caused by the intentions of the republican leadership to unite the Sortavalsky city settlement with neighboring Helyulsky.
