MegaFon speeds up video and TV

MegaFon continues to expand its content delivery network and launches its own Multi-CDN solution, which significantly speeds up video launch and minimizes delays in TV broadcasts for users in remote regions.

Over the past few weeks, the consumption of online video and digital television by MegaFon TV has grown by 30%.

MegaFon, in addition to the existing content delivery system, already provided by 17 data centers, is starting to use its own Multi-CDN data caching platform with a total bandwidth of 400 Gbps. This will allow subscribers to receive video content from servers located in close proximity to the subscriber's region. These improvements will be most noticeable for users in Siberia and the Far East.

Multi-CDN significantly improves the quality of the service and reduces delays in video playback, especially when broadcasting HD TV channels during peak hours. The system caches more than 200 TV channels in real time and simultaneously stores over 250 TB of the most popular video content by viewers.

“At a time when many subscribers are forced to stay and work at home, we continue to improve the quality and speed of watching TV channels and films from our extensive media library. The total bandwidth of the system is 400 Gbps, which will allow a large number of users to view content even with increased network load,” said Andrey Kushnarev, CEO of MegaLabs.

In the second half of March 2020, MegaFon TV online service traffic increased by 30%. Content for young viewers showed the biggest growth – the number of cartoon and movie views for children and teenagers increased by 40%. Interest in news in Russia increased the number of TV channel views. Thus, a record 140,000 users of the service watched the second address of the president at the same time.
