Ornithologists for the first time observed the Burunnaya Kulik in Russia - the species of birds that lives in Alaska and in Canada. The news of the new form of birds was reported by the All -Russian Environmental Protection Institute (VNII Ecology).
Burun Kulik ( Calidris Virgata ) nests in Alaska and in the west of the Canadian territory of Yukon. In the rocky tundra, females lay eggs in small recesses on the ground covered with vegetation. Both parents take care of offspring. The Burunny Kulik spends winter in a territory that extends a long strip through the entire Pacific coast of North and South America, from Canada to the Fiery Earth. The species was described in 1789 by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin based on a copy collected by the James Cook expedition, who visited Alaska a year earlier. The size of the Burunnaya wader is 23–26 centimeters, the weight of the bird is 133–251 grams. Females are on average slightly larger than males.
The meeting with the Burun wading on the west coast of Kamchatka was the first not only for Russia, but for all of Eurasia. The bird was met during the VNII Ecology expedition to study the migration stops of the waders in the estuaries of the Khayryuzov-White-headed rivers. The expedition participants watched the Burunnaya Kulik from July 13 to August 2 and took photos of the bird. The definition of the species was confirmed by the faunistic commission of the working group on the waders of North Eurasia and specialists from North America who worked a lot with this type.
The article describing the observations of the Burunnaya wader in Kamchatka is published in the specialized magazine Wader Study, which is published by the International Study of the Studies.
