On April 17, an interesting album “ Drumazhur” was released on the Label of Improvisation Music “Topot” - the documentation of a live speech given in the summer of 2018 in the Gorky Park by a quartet of drummers Oksana Grigoryeva, Peter Ottsk, Sergey Bolotin and Andrei Kim. The label represents the video for the opening album of the composition “DRU” - a fifteen -minute video in which cyclists rush from the mountain under a violent drum improvisation. The founder of “Topota” Yevgeny Galochkin told Colta.ru about how the idea of performing a drum quartet in Gorky Park appeared, as well as the connection of downshill with improvisation (spoiler: pure chance).
The idea of collecting such a composition - a quartet of the best Moscow improvisant drummers - was born spontaneously. In the summer of 2018, Gorky Park invited me to make a couple of free concerts in some of his locations - the Alpbau Doll in the Museum and his modernist brothers - an openwork arbor. For some reason, I immediately wanted to see in the rounded space of the gazebo the living dialogue of musicians-loud, spectacular, necessarily in increased tones. As a result, the idea of collecting a quartet consisting of drummers alone was born in my head - so that their shock units stood around, and the musicians could constantly look at each other, communicating with the help of facial expressions.
But why drummers? In any composition, I immediately begin to listen to the drummer and most of the concert is ready to follow him only. In addition, I always wanted to repeat the large performance of “77 Boa Drum ” of the Boredoms group, which expanded its composition to 77 drummers. And on July 7, 2007 at 07:07 PM on the Brooklyn bridge in New York, a shock concert gave.
In our performance, we did not pursue any symbolism - to us as ordinary citizens who let the saliva from free improvisation (and drums), I just wanted to see the living interaction of the musicians and feel the power of the simultaneous sound of four percussion instruments at once. The names of the musicians came up instantly - they became the old friends of Oksana Grigoriev, Peter Ototsky, Sergey Bolotin and Andrei Kim. Many of these guys could hear in groups such as Jars , Ussy , Brom, Baritone Domination , Lenin Package, Silence Kit , Bosch with you, Admi , Topot Arkestra, Analog Sound , Apeman , Zlurad, Suscometer, Metro 3,,,, “Metro 3”. Jeffrey , 8 Hz and others.
Oksana Grigoryeva, Andrey KimThat summer evening, I hope, was remembered not only to those who came to him on purpose, but also to ordinary onlookers, who looked into the gazebo on a loud sound. The quartet improvised for exactly two hours, throwing with impudent remarks with each other. Due to the features of the form of the gazebo, it was possible to build your own sound picture, bypassing it in a circle and listening to each musician separately. On the record, which we published on the Topot label on Friday, the game of drummers is also divorced through the channels: in the right ear, the rhythms of Peter Ottsk and Sergey Bolotin, in the left, Andrei Kim and Oksana Grigoryeva are heard.
Unfortunately, the full video recording of that event was not preserved, so I decided to make a video for one of the tracks from the album. The idea again came spontaneously and quite by accident - in general, I like to stick on the video from the raids along the downhill, when the cyclists headlong down from the mountain, jumping over the pits, roots of trees, wild animals, rivers and other participants in the race. And then one day I accidentally forgot to turn off the video of one of these races when I listened to the album of the quartet of drummers. Sound and picture suddenly and perfectly overlapped each other and in some places closed. As a result, the music of the guys at times intensified the drama of the race, and the video racing with such a soundtrack began to watch much more exciting.
Without thinking twice, I mounted the four most savory races, borrowing the most impressive moments from there, and put the composition “DRU” on the DRUMAZHUR album.
