The Center for the Lyumier brothers celebrates a decade

Founded in Moscow 10 years ago, the Lumier Brothers Photo Center prepared a virtual tour for the anniversary, and in the summer it plans to open a large exhibition.

The Center’s collection has been created since 2001, today it contains more than 13 thousand original prints of 330 domestic and foreign authors.

At the summer anniversary exhibition, which will be located in all three halls of the center of the Lyumier brothers, the collection work of the most significant authors of the Soviet century of the XX century from the Lumier Gallery Fund will be presented. For the first time, the viewer will be able to see vintage and copyright prints of one of the largest collections of Soviet photography.

The purpose of the anniversary exhibition is to show a unique author’s seal and vintage work, the rarities of Soviet photography. The curatorial concept of the exhibition will recreat the movement from the 20s to the 90s of the XX century, reflecting the names of the classics of the avant-garde, the war period, the post-war era. Going into the era of a photographic thaw, will reveal the club movement of photography, which gave us new directions that reflected in the era of the 80s. Building work inspired by future freedom, and the 90s, exploding a new era. A separate hall will be dedicated to the Lithuanian school of photography.

The history of the Lumier brothers' photo center began in 2001, when the gallery of Lumier, which was located in a small space in the central house of the artist, became the first private photographic gallery in Russia. In 2009, the chief curator Natalya Grigoryeva-Litvinskaya decided to create a photo center in Krasnoy October. The center opened in March 2010 by the project “Icon of the 1960-80s”, which told about the main persons of the Thaw era and the best authors of that period.

Over 10 years, more than 260 photo exhibitions took place in the center of the Lyumier brothers, of which 50 were dedicated to Soviet photography. On the site of the center from 2010 to 2020, exhibitions of authors from 23 countries of the world were shown. At different times, the classics of photographs and modern authors from Russia, the USA, France, Great Britain, Finland, Scotland, Netherlands, Sweden, Japan, Poland, Ukraine, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Serbia, and the Czech Republic, Spain, Monaco, Monaco, Mexico, Belarus and Belgium were presented at different times.

In addition, since 2010, the Lyumier Brothers Center has organized 12 international projects, including the festival of current modern photography and the author's book PhotobookFest . From 2005 to 2019, 11 publications dedicated to Soviet photography were published at the Center's publishing house.
