Repeat of the program dated March 30, 2019
Leonid Velekhov : This time there will be no usual saying that our program is not about tyrants, it is about real personalities, their fate, actions, their views on life. It will be about the tyrant and the cult of personality in the historical, meaning of the word in which this phrase entered the Russian language.
71 years ago in the Soviet Union, a campaign for combating cosmopolitanism began. She had severe consequences for many wonderful personalities, and almost had the consequences of even more tragic and large -scale.
My guest today is a historian, writer, television -cockedman Leonid Mlechin .
( Video shift. Sanding text :
Until January 1949, the words of this-cosmopolitan-there was no everyday life in the Soviet language, and what it means that the vast majority of people did not know. Yes, in general, it was not in everyday life. From the very beginning of the defeat of the “antipatriotic group of theatrical critics” to those who followed this vile story, it was clear that these mediocre playwrights were taking scores with their critics. The worst of the worst-Sofrons, harsh, Bubenov, first-born (who will say something to these names, in what garbage dumps you can find their plays and novels?)-They smashed the best of the best. Joseph Yuzovsky, George Boyadzhiev, Leonid Malyugin, Yakov Warsaw, Alexander Borshchagovsky - these were the best, most acute critical feathers of the country.
The attack on "Bezrodny Cosmopolitans" followed almost immediately after the defeat of the Jewish Anti -Fascist Committee and the arrest of its members, prominent figures of Soviet science and culture. A few months earlier, this organization was decapitated: the great artist, the most popular Solomon Mikholes, secretly and brutally killed Stalin Kilera. An episode with his participation was cut out of the film "Circus", where he sings a lullaby in Yiddish ...
Ahead was the culmination of this campaign - the third Stalinist blow to Soviet Jews, who promised to be the most crushing. Yes, Glory to you Lord, Stalin died. He choked in blood spilled by him, as my mother said, hearing on the morning of March 5, 1953 on the radio message about his death. And applauded for joy. Mom was not a Jewish, but not only Jews rejoiced that day. But of course, they should have been happy, including my father. Kondrashka, who grabbed the tyrant, saved them from the new Holocaust.
In this story, which we will discuss today with one of the best specialists in the Stalin era, Leonid Mlechin, everything is terrible. As, however, in everything related to the name of Stalin. But almost the most disgusting of all is this anti -Semitism that he revived in the country that defeated Nazism).
Studio
Leonid Velekhov : So, let's start from the beginning, although, in fact, this is not the beginning of this story, but the middle part. 1949, on January 28, in Pravda the advanced article "On one antipatriotic group of theatrical critics" is published. And never-neither before nor after-such attention to the wonderful, but still small in quantity, a professional group, such as theatrical critics,. And I, as a person in the first profession belonging to this group, decided to start our conversation from this.
How do you explain - why did you start with theatrical critics? Are they going to limit them? Was it all the accounts of a group of mediocre playwrights with talented critics who ridiculed the production of their plays, or was it planned as the beginning of some big campaign?
Leonid Mlechin : Whenever we are talking about Stalin, we are faced with the most difficult problem: he was never frank with anyone, maybe only in early childhood and youth, but these people have not been preserved, there are no evidence. He never set out his intentions, did not write down anything, did not share anything with anyone. We can only judge this post -fact of this by what was done. We can draw some chains of his aspirations. None of what was happening after the Second World War in our country was not an accident, but was part of the Stalinist plans. He was never in a hurry with them; For a long time he hatched his ideas and realized them slowly and slowly.
As for the story with theatrical critics, it contains, of course, something mysterious. A few weeks later, in the "oak" hall of the central house of writers, where many generations of people later went to one of the most famous restaurants in Moscow, a meeting was arranged, which was performed by the Secretary of the Union of Soviet Writers Alexander Alexandrovich Fadeev, who was smashing theatrical critics, many of whom he knew, and with some of which he was friends and whose professionalism highly appreciated. At the height of the performances, the light went out to the Central House of Sciences, and candles were brought. And he continued his performance by candlelight. This was something devilish.
Of course, this story began much earlier. Anti -Semitism is the inheritance of the Great War. Of course, anti -Semitism as one of the most ancient prejudices has always existed, but the Soviet government after the revolution has long, at least formally, in words, at least at the level of documents, fought with all types of nationalism, and even in particular. Anti -Semitism flared up again when the war began. It was the core of German propaganda. In all occupied territories, this was part of propaganda. We see this according to the documents that partisan detachments send to Moscow, with the question: "What should we answer?" The propaganda of the occupation authorities was built on this, and she found a response from the population. In Moscow, they began to look for an answer and found it. The answer was this: the trump card is to knock out the Germans from the Germans, that you, de, fight for the Jews, because you have Jews in all high positions - to remove the Jews, make Jews invisible. The process of removing Jews from leadership posts began. And as soon as this wish flickered, it was not even recorded in any document, it was not verbalized in the form of a guiding indication, but it was felt, anti -Semitism broke out in full. He was looking for his way out. And the way out after some time was found.
Here we enter another part of the history of post -war history, which was that Stalin was preparing for a new big war with the United States all the last years of his life. But like any war that Stalin prepared, it was supposed to begin with the identification of internal enemies, with the creation of the necessary atmosphere in the country. Immediately after the war, the struggle with all the Western begins. The set of decisions - about the magazine "Star" and "Leningrad", about music, was engaged in the secretary of the Central Committee of Zhdanov who was responsible for ideology - was generated by one. Zhdanov said about this at the meeting: "Comrade Stalin instructed us to engage in anti -Western propaganda." But when such ideological processes occur, many people arise who see in this a rare luck for themselves. "I do not understand in physics, he understands. I write on him that he is an agent of American imperialism, he is being removed from his post, and now I am a head of the audience." "I am a very bad playwright. Nobody wants to go to my plays, critics criticism in newspapers. If I write that the critic is actually an agent of imperialism, then criticism is seized, they don’t write critical articles about me anymore, and they put my play." And it was one of the motives. All these anti -Semitic campaigns, these campaigns are anti -Western campaigns, all the campaigns that led to the degradation of our spiritual life, were eagerly supported by a considerable number of people, losers and three -year -olds, let's call them so for simplicity that saw their rare chance in this ...
Leonid Velekhov : Such an elevator.
Leonid Mlechin : If talents are removed, brilliant people leave, positions are dismissed. And one of those people who incredibly benefited from the fact that as a result of this article a whole generation of theatrical critics was removed was the playwright Anatoly Surov. Now no one knows him, and his play "Green Street" was staged in the Moscow Art Theater. He received the Stalin Prize. They admired. He already walked like Shakespeare in Moscow. He was adored by the then Moscow owner Georgy Popov, who had already seen himself almost the successor of Stalin. And the most interesting story with Surov will happen a little later, when it turns out that he did not write his plays! He hired these unfortunate people who lost their jobs almost everything, and were under the pain of arrest. He hired them, and they wrote these plays for him.
Leonid Velekhov : What did he burn on, you know?
Leonid Mlechin : He burned twice. Firstly, he began to drink much in the central house of writers that we mentioned. And once they drank with Bubenov - there was such a Mikhail Bubenov, the author of the story "White Birch" ... Surov began to mock the story. To which the drunken Bubenov told him that at least he wrote her himself. And then Surov stuck his fork in the file part ... It would all be a stern, but there were elections to the Supreme Council. Drunk harsh came already at the end of the voting day, took the ballot, he did not like something, he began to trample him with his feet. But this did not say goodbye to anyone! He was taken away from a party ticket, a certificate of a member of the Writers Union, he was then returned, but he disappeared stern. This is just a story that all these ideological campaigns had a purely practical meaning.
Leonid Velekhov : But, nevertheless, only the harsh, and Anatoly Vladimirovich Sofronov, the main loser of this campaign, in high esteem and in high positions, survived, in my opinion, until the end of the 80s, if not the beginning of the 90s, received a hero of socialist labor, flourished in everything. Moscow and peripheral Kholui-regimens put him with might and main, and not only at the Gogol Theater, where no one went, and who only disgraced his name with the production of all in a row of Sofronov Grafomania, but also in decent, real theaters ... first-born, tambourines, too, all lived safely. And critics, they destroyed this life.
Leonid Mlechin : No one was imprisoned of them, and that is good.
Leonid Velekhov : They planted Johann Altman for a short while, literally two months, in Moscow, and in Leningrad they planted Simon Dreden, musicologist, and theater. He sat for ten years.
Leonid Mlechin : They went on other matters. For cosmopolitanism, no one was imprisoned in criticism.
Leonid Velekhov : This is so. But the campaign to combat cosmopolitanism preceded, they shared two months, the defeat of the Jewish anti -fascist committee. And if you still rewind the film a little back, at the beginning of 1948, the murder of Mikhoels, January 1948, and the actual closure of the Goset, the Jewish theater. But everything was done there quietly: Mikhoels is an accident, Goset - they say, the audience does not go. The Jewish anti-fascist committee, where, in my opinion, one and a half hundred people arrested and shot thirteen people, already in 1952, there was also no information that there were some arrests: they closed and closed. And even-someone told or read somewhere-Simonov and Ehrenburg abroad, leaving, were forced to lie that they were Kvitko, Fefer and others on the street, talked with them, they are in order ... And it seems to me that cosmopolitan critics are the first actually announced anti-Semitic campaign.
Leonid Mlechin : These are very different processes, they go through a comma. They gradually built into the system. The murder of Mikhoels went under the article "Disclosure of information about the life of the leader."
Leonid Velekhov : But this was also hidden.
Leonid Mlechin : In general, everything is hidden, everything that happens under Stalin never has any open justification. The fact is that Stalin was obsessed with secrecy, and every day he was put an overview of a foreign press on the table. And so he reads the article that Stalin may soon leave his position, he was inherited by Molotov (for Molotov it ended in the arrest of his wife, I think that the arrest and execution was waiting for Molotov himself) ... Stalin ordered to find out what, where did the information come from?! It never occurred to him that simply his absence and rare appearance in public, already in poor physical form - this was enough for American correspondents who worked in Moscow. He ordered the Ministry of State Security: to find out from what sources, on which channels does information about his personal life take. There is an assignment, and it was immediately fulfilled: the relatives of his first wife, Alliluyev, whom he hated, work in the Jewish Anti -Fascist Committee, headed by an outstanding actor, People's Artist of the USSR Solomon Mikhailovich Mikhiels. And Mikhoels communicates with foreigners. And then arrests begin. These people are beaten. Some of them survived and then told how they beat: one eight days were beaten with sticks.
Leonid Velekhov : There, six people only died in prison, without any execution.
Leonid Mlechin : They testified, of course, that they found out that they had an instruction - to learn about the health of Comrade Stalin, as well as where he happens, where he lives. There was also an amazing, little -known story that they were going to fire the Kremlin from the American embassy and destroy Stalin. This was the most important development on which everything was based. And it was instructed (we just know this well, because it was investigated immediately after the death of Stalin) to the Minister of State Security Abakumov - to eliminate Mikhoels. He entrusted this to his first deputy Sergei Ivanovich Okholtsov, who, together with the group of operators (all names are known), went to Minsk, where the then Minister of State Security of Belarus Tsanava, Lavrentiy Fomich provided him all the help. Mikhoels was sent, he had to take away in the post -war Belarus, destroyed by the war, performances at the Stalin Prize. He was happy there because he was an outstanding actor, and for the Belarusian theater public his arrival was incredible happiness. The critic Golubov-Potapov, who was a secret agent of the second main department of the Ministry of State Security, went with him ...
Leonid Velekhov : But this does not mean that he was aware of the operation, Golubov-Potapov.
Leonid Mlechin : The fact that they would kill him did not know that it never occurred to him.
Leonid Velekhov : Yes, yes, yes. He was a completely harmless person, a musicologist.
Leonid Mlechin : They took under an innocent pretext to the cottage of Tsanava ... I was there, at this dacha. Now she has burned down, she does not exist. Employees of the Belarusian State Security Committee even showed me where they were killed. Ogoltsov contacted the apparatus of the NP-livaries with Moscow, Abakumov, Abakumov on the apparatus of urban special communications-with Stalin, received instructions ... They were crushed by the living truck! I stood in this place, Lenechka! It was one of the most unbearable moments in my professional life: I stood in the place where two people were simply crushed by a truck. I do not know another such monstrous sadism. Stalin was ordered - to staging as a car disaster. The corpses were taken and thrown on the outskirts of Minsk. This is something completely incredible. These people are known: they all received orders. Some time ago I was in Belarus, since the KGB of Belarus helped me in various investigations, they did not feel the heirs of Stalin ... I spoke there before the operational composition, said something. Several years have passed. And one of those who arranged this trip told me: "Do you know, there, in the hall, in the back row there was a man with a beard? This is a man who was driving that car." And they in the committee thought whether to introduce us, but did not dare to introduce us ... Mikhoels were buried in Moscow with all the honor, Ehrenburg, who performed in the panachid, spoke about the newly created Israel - it seemed that nothing foreshadowed ... But then anti -Semitic processes would begin to unfold very quickly. The fact is that this is due to the creation of the state of Israel. And also this is not so easy to understand: the Jewish state in Palestine would not have appeared without Stalin.
Leonid Velekhov : Of course!
Leonid Mlechin : Because of those great powers that the fate of Palestine depended on the war, England was categorically against the Palestine section and the creation of a Jewish state there, France was not interested in this, China was not interested. And all the political leadership of the United States, the entire American establishment was anti -Sionist. The State Department, headed by George Marshall, a military ministry, headed by Forest, which was a professional anti -Semite, were categorically against the appearance of a Jewish state. And the only great power who stated that she supports the Palestine section and the creation of a Jewish state there was the Soviet Union. Not a single politician in the world, not a single diplomat defended the work of Zionism with such fervor, accuracy and clarity as the Soviet representative at the UN Andrei Andreyevich Gromyko. But he did this, of course, not on his own initiative: he received the text of speech from Moscow, the text of the speech was approved by Stalin. Stalin did everything so that Israel appeared on the state map of the world. Moreover. On the Jewish state, immediately, on the day of the proclamation, Arab armies moved from all sides, which were sure that in two days they would end this with this. Great Britain refused to supply weapons to the Jewish state, she supplied him with Arab countries. The United States introduced the embargo in general for the supply of weapons to the Middle Eastern states. The Jewish state would simply have died if Stalin had not provided support.
So, so.
Why?
But this is one side of the matter.
