A State Duma deputy demanded that the Prosecutor General's Office check the series about the 1930s in the USSR

Sergei Gavrilov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Development of Civil Society and Issues of Public and Religious Associations, sent a request to the Prosecutor General's Office to check the TV series Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes "for insulting the feelings of believers." This was reported on the website of the committee.

“Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes” is a TV series broadcast on one of the central Russian channels that tells about the fate of a woman sent to Siberia in the 1930s as a result of a campaign against the “kulaks” in the USSR.

In the appeal of deputy Gavrilov, it is indicated that, in his opinion, the episode in the series, where the names of representatives of the Central Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia are listed as political prisoners, does not meet the requirements of the law on the protection of the feelings of believers.

MP Gavrilov said:

We do not need films shown to an audience, especially numerous during the period of self-isolation, that provoke divisions in society, in particular, incite inter-religious hatred. We do not encroach on the freedom of creativity. But in the year of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory, in the difficult time our country is going through in the fight against coronavirus, there is an undeniable need to demonstrate on state television channels works of art that instill a sense of pride and patriotism for the indivisible history of our country - the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and modern Russia. We are all interested in consolidation, public harmony. I am sure that budgetary funds should be directed to the creation and display of such patriotic works on central television channels.

The official also asked the prosecutor's office to pay attention to the fact that the series allegedly "denigrates the history of the country" and "splits society."
