Russia has taken second place in the world in terms of the number of cases - there are already 232,243 people. Over the past 24 hours, 10,899 new cases have been identified. Russia has surpassed Spain (there are 227,436 cases there). Only the United States is higher (1,347,881 infected). Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov and his wife were hospitalized with coronavirus. Peskov said that he last saw Vladimir Putin more than a month ago.
Over the past 24 hours, 3,711 people have recovered in Russia (a total of 43,512 since the beginning of the pandemic). 107 people died (total 2116). In St. Petersburg, a fire in a hospital killed five patients with coronavirus . The fire occurred due to a short circuit in the ventilator. Three days ago, a device from the same manufacturer caught fire in a hospital in Moscow.
We collect up-to-date data on coronavirus in Russia every day. Here they are in the formof a map and table .
In Greece, less than three thousand people were infected with coronavirus, 151 people died. We spoke with Greek journalists and scientists about how the country managed to cope with the pandemic . In Italy , bars, restaurants, beauty salons, museums and libraries will begin to open from May 18. Spain recorded its lowest daily increase in new infections in two months. The European Commission is preparing a plan to open borders . The borders between the countries least affected by the epidemic will be opened first.
Measures to support citizens and businesses seem to work only on paper . Yesterday, Vladimir Putin announced the third package of measures (by the way, look at what you can count on ). Vedomosti estimated the cost of implementing these measures at 800 billion rubles . But so far, doctors in Kommunarka cannot receive the bonuses promised a month ago.
Restrictions have begun to be eased in Russian regions . In Tatarstan, the access control regime was abolished, hairdressers opened in Kamchatka, and shopping centers opened in the Kaliningrad region, but only on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. In this material we collect information about what and where restrictions are being lifted.
We explain why it is too early to lift restrictions . We do this using a mathematical model that we developed together with MSU Associate Professor Mikhail Tamm, and models from foreign epidemiologists. According to our calculations, the coronavirus spread rate, which shows how many people one patient infects, has still not decreased enough to lift quarantine .
Due to the pandemic, it has become more difficult for people with cancer to see doctors. Planned hospitalizations are either carried out less frequently or are canceled completely . Waiting times for planned treatment and diagnostics are shifting, oncologists complain.
Ambulance doctors near Moscow are not provided with protective equipment and are not tested for coronavirus . The medical management denies all complaints. Even if one of the employees shows symptoms, their colleagues on the team continue to work. Doctors take extra shifts, but patients still have to wait 20 hours for ambulances .
There are not enough thermometers in pharmacies . Several pharmacy chains are immediately faced with a shortage of thermometers for measuring body temperature. The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that everything is fine with supplies. By the way, here are our instructions on how to measure temperature correctly .
We have made a new application "Jellyfish". Everything is new there: navigation, design, dark theme - and you can create beautiful stories for Instagram. Here is the version for iPhone , here is for Android .
Because of the pandemic, relations between Belarus and Russia have deteriorated. In the spring, pro-government media and officials of both countries began to criticize their neighbors’ actions in the fight against coronavirus. The information war led to the fact that the Channel One correspondent was accused of lying and expelled from Belarus. On May 9, in Minsk, unlike Moscow, a Victory Parade was held. Political scientists believe that these bickering will only worsen the conflict between the countries .
Oil began to fall in price again . Investors fear a second wave of the pandemic. The head of Rosneft, Igor Sechin, just in case, has already asked for help from Putin : in particular, to make loans more accessible to Rosneft, its contractors and suppliers, as well as to defer tax payments for work related to geological exploration.
Sales of passenger cars in Russia fell by 72%. Automakers are already calling April 2020 “black” and preparing to return to work in May—but they don’t expect sales growth .
Journalist Karen Shainyan told how he recovered from coronavirus and took an antibody test. Shainyan also spoke with one of the creators of the test , immunologist Grigory Efimov. The scientist named what he thought was a fair price for the test—about a thousand rubles.
PS There is not much good news in this newsletter, so we ask you to share good stories. And we continue to publish them to make it more fun for everyone.
Here's what reader Elya wrote to us:
My work is related to the beauty industry, and like all my colleagues, I am now at home. So, it seems to me that I have never in my life spent my time with such benefit for the soul and without rushing anywhere. Over the past month and a half, I’ve managed to do so much that it’s impossible to list it in one letter, but the main thing is: I’ve finally returned to reading, for which I’ve often lacked resources lately; I took many webinars and courses and expanded my knowledge; I returned to meditation and started keeping a gratitude book, because there is always something to say thank you to the Higher Powers for.
I would like to say to everyone reading, if every morning you wake up with the thought that something good will definitely happen today, it will certainly happen.
Take care of yourself.
Let's join.
